Bayern Munich vs Arsenal Match Preview

Despite a recent history of poor results against Bayern Munich, Arsenal would have been quietly confident after being drawn against the former German champions owing to a sustained period of poor form in 2024.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have already lost six games in 2024 and seen the Bundesliga title go to Bayer Leverkusen, but they turned the tables on Arsenal in London last week by going 2-1 ahead in the first half before eventually being pulled back to a 2-2 draw.

Arsenal’s lack of recent Champions League experience - particularly in the knockout stages - told as they were cut open in the first half, Serge Gnabry and Harry Kane getting on the scoresheet, but the weaknesses in the Bayern backline were exposed through the game.

The visitors in the second leg will be well aware that they have not won in Munich since 2013 and could potentially have some old scars from the 5-1 hammering they suffered in 2017, but will go into the game knowing they have the tools to come away with a place in the last four of the Champions League.

William Saliba and Gabriel were uncharacteristically loose in the first leg and if they can play to their usual level, Arsenal will be confident of keeping a dangerous Bayern attack at bay while their forwards will fancy causing problems going the other way.

It promises to be another entertaining tie with the experience of Bayern at this stage of the competition likely to count for a lot, but Arsenal at a key stage in their development where a game like this could go some way to showcasing their aptitude for such occasions.
