Brighton v Southampton Match Preview
Are Brighton in the title race? That may be a statement that grabs your attention but if Arsenal are considered contenders and Chelsea operating as outsiders, then the Seagulls may also need to be a part of the conversation.
The reason being that each of these three teams sit directly below Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League table and each of them have 22 points on the board after their first 12 matches of the season.
A tally that this trio of outfits will look to expand on this weekend and of the three mentioned, it is Brighton who have the opportunity to ask a question of the two London rivals that currently have a better goal difference.
That question could be raised by the end of Friday evening and with Fabian Hurzeler’s men preparing to entertain local rivals Southampton, the former St. Pauli manager will be keen to build on last Saturday’s win over fellow South Coast opposition.
A 2-1 win over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium looked to be rather routine by the time the visitors raced into a two-goal lead. That was until Carlos Baleba’s sending off on the hour gave the Cherries a reason to get back into the game.
Andoni Iraola’s men huffed and puffed but they could not blow Brighton’s house down in the conditions of Storm Bert and although David Brooks would halve the deficit in stoppage time, there would not be enough time to knock the wind out of the visitors sails.
While Friday’s opponents Southampton are already sailing in choppy relegation waters and although they gave league leaders Liverpool a test last Sunday, the same defensive failures were on show to expose Russell Martin’s side.
A 3-2 defeat at St Mary’s and three goals conceded from their own doing, no matter how easy on the eye Southampton’s football may or may attempt to be, repeatedly being masters of your own downfall is likely to mean a repeat of Championship football next season.
Stylistic preference or not, the Saints should prefer to earn points and considering they are five points off the pace when it comes to survival, one wonders if manager Martin can survive before the busy festive period gets underway.
But now it is time for my for two tips and with Brighton yet to be beaten at home in the league this season, I see no reason to see that run end on Friday. Further to that, I am creating a two-leg bet builder of home win and under 2.5 total goals at odds of 19/5 with Coral.
In addition to this, I am also going to focus on Southampton’s lack of discipline and with Flynn Downes already collecting four yellow cards this season, I am going to back him to pick up the first card on Friday at odds of 8/1 with bet365.
