Championship Play-Off Odds: Can Bristol City and Coventry hold on?

Updated: April 30, 2025 at 3:13 pm GMT+1

The race is on to finish in the top six of the Championship, as we enter the final day of the EFL season with five teams still in contention for the play-offs.

Bristol City and Coventry hold all the cards at this stage and are comfortable favourites with UK betting sites to finish fifth and sixth respectively, but Millwall, Blackburn and Middlesbrough could all pip them on the final day.

Whoever it is will meet Sheffield United and Sunderland in the play-off semi-finals before what has been dubbed the 'richest game in football' - the play-off final.

With just one game to go, let's have a look at the lay of the land and how the table could finish.

Bristol City

Next fixture: Preston (H)

Even successive defeats hasn't loosened Bristol City's grip on fifth, with Coventry also losing two in a row, but the chasing pack has closed in.

There should be no real reason for Robins fans to be too concerned, it is all in their hands and a home game against the horribly out-of-form Preston is just about the best game they could have hope for with so much on the line.

There might be some concerns at thease with which Leeds brushed them aside on Monday, but they always knew they'd be fifth going into this game and anything at Elland Road would be a bonus.

It would be a significant shock if they were to drop out of the top six now and realistically, a point would probably be enough to guarantee fifth place - but they should be very confident of picking up all three.

Coventry

Next fixture: Middlesbrough (H)

Wow, what a game this will be!

Everything is on the line and it's Frank Lampard v Michael Carrick - two former England internationals who would have competed against each other for the Premier League many a time.

With Millwall and Blackburn both facing very tough games, I would go as far as describing this game as an unofficial play-off quarter-final - although one in which Coventry already hold a significant advantage.

If Boro win - and it is a big if - then they would jump above the Sky Blues into sixth and if the other games go as expected, then they will have snuck into the play-offs.

Neither team goes into it in good form, but you would back Coventry to get the job done with home advantage and just having that extra consistency since Lampard took over.

If you're looking for a solid football tip this weekend, a Bristol City/Coventry double would be a good way to go.

Millwall

Next fixture: Burnley (A)

When you're on a dream run and on the cusp of the play-offs - something nobody would have tipped them for in August - the last thing you want is a trip to Turf Moor.

It's as daunting a task as you could ask for. At least Leeds have a tendency to let points slip every now and then, but Burnley are miserly and virtually unbeatable.

With the Clarets still going for the league title, you can't see them dropping away and with Millwall's goal difference below Coventry and Bristol's, they need a win really if they are to break into that top six.

It would be a brilliant story if they were to gatecrash the top six, but with the way the games have fallen, it's just very hard to see them getting anything from Burnley.

Blackburn

Next fixture: Sheffield United (A)

Similarly to Millwall, a final day trip to Sheffield United is the last thing Blackburn wanted at this stage.

Granted, the Blades haven't quite been the same side they were a couple of months ago but with their fate sealed and the automatic places gone, we have seen them return to some sort of form with two wins in three.

You wouldn't be totally shocked if Rovers turned the tables on Chris Wilder's side, but it looks a tough ask.

A point won't be enough - Coventry will finish on either 67 or 69, but if they lose to Boro then Boro would have 67 points to Blackburn's potential 66 - so they head to Brammall Lane knowing they need to win.

But with four wins on the bounce against Luton, Millwall, Sunderland and Watford - there are some tough fixtures in there - it looks unlikely, but why not?

Middlesbrough

Next fixture: Coventry (A)

As mentioned above, this is the tie of the weekend and one that could easily go either way.

Boro were one of the teams fancied at the start of the season to finish in the top six but they've just never totally convinced, or settled down into a sustained run of form, so you don't know what you're getting from week to week.

They have the attacking talent to do the job on the day and approaching the game with an attacking mindset could well suit them in comparison to Coventry - who might be happy just to sit on a point.

It would be a great story to see someone jump three places on the final day of the season, and to be honest? I'm not ruling it out at all, if you want value in the football betting markets, this is where I'd be looking.
