Championship Title Odds: Leeds 4/1 favourites after play-off loss

The 2023/24 Championship campaign drew to a close on Sunday, May 26, as Leeds United and Southampton battled it out at Wembley in the play-off final.

Southampton upset the odds and came out as 1-0 winners, joining Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the Premier League for the 2024/25 season.

Following the conclusion of the play-off final, Leeds are the new favourites to go on and win the Championship in 2024/25. However, they will face stiff competition from recently relegated teams like Burnley and Luton, as well as from a Middlesbrough side on the rise under Micheal Carrick.

2024/25 Championship Title Odds: The Contenders

Leeds

It has been a rough few weeks for Leeds United as they gear up for another season in the Championship. The Whites became the first team in Championship history to get 90 points and not go up, they are now the first team to lose four play-off finals, they won 41 points from an available 45 at the start of 2024 and did not get promoted and were top of the league during the March international break.

Leeds’ season fell apart in the final five games when they picked up just one win in five, allowing Ipswich to steal 2nd from them. However, on paper at least, the Championship looks much easier for the Peacocks this time around as the relegated teams are lower in quality than the ones that came down in 2022/23.

Burnley

Speaking of recently relegated teams, Burnley are currently the second favourites to win the Championship in the upcoming season.

The Clarets are expected to lose manager Vincent Kompany to Bayern Munich in the coming weeks. However, the majority of the squad that dominated England’s second tier in 2022/23 by securing 101 points remains, while new additions such as Sander Berge, James Trafford, Jordan Beyer and Aaron Ramsey should boost their promotion chances this time around.

Luton

Luton earned promotion to the Premier League in 2022/23 by winning the play-offs, finishing 21 points adrift of Burnley. In turn, the Hatters were expected to struggle in their first season in the top flight.

And while they were ultimately relegated, Luton performed the best of the three sides who came up and unlike Sheffield United and Burnley, are expected to head in 2024/25 with the same manager who won them promotion to the Premier League in the first place.

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough have an outside chance of winning the Championship in 2024/25. Boro finished 8th last season following a rather dismal run of form midway through the campaign but they did go on to lose just one of their last 12 league games (3-4 versus Leeds).

The North East outfit have a top manager in Michael Carrick, who showed in 2023/24 he can get a lot out of very little in terms of quality. So, should Middlesbrough finally spend some money and sign a few players this summer, Carrick definitely has the ability to get the Teessiders in the promotion race come next May.
