On paper, to me, this is the best of the quarter-finals. This is the one which has the most star quality, with the likes of Jofra Archer, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Tymal Mills and Phil Salt set to line-up.
England white ball Jos Buttler was supposed to play for the Lightning but has had a setback in his recovery from a calf injury.
Sussex finished second in the South Group with nine wins, while Lancashire finished third in the North with seven wins. Despite getting a few England players back late on, they actually fell away a bit to miss out on a top-two finish and a home quarter-final.
These two sides have only met twice in Blast history - two quarter-finals at Hove in 2011 and 2020. Lancashire won them both. And I can see the Red Rose biting the Sharks once again.
Instead of taking the 8/11 widely on offer for the straight Lightning win, I’d be keener to take bet365′s 7/4 - I’ve put together a bet builder double - on them to win and a fifty to be scored in the match.
Wells to dig deep on return home
There’s a couple of Lancashire players returning to their old stomping ground in Phil Salt and Luke Wells.
The former we know all about, the latter less so. But I think he’s been Lancashire’s player of the tournament so far with 227 runs at the top of the order and 11 wickets with his canny leg-spinners.
When he was a Sussex player, he was seen as a red ball specialist. Since joining Lancashire ahead of 2021, he has progressed to be a valuable white ball asset to the point he has played in the Hundred for the last two years with Welsh Fire.
I’m not going to be adventurous with Wells, but I do think Betfair’s 5/6 on him to post over 19.5 runs in the match is worth taking on.
I also like the same firm’s 11/10 on there to be at least one run out in the match. There’s always a great chance of a run out in a T20, especially a knockout match when things get hectic.
I’m going to use this match as a starter for a win treble for the last three quarter-finals.
I’m going to go for a Lancashire win, for Somerset to win at Northamptonshire on Thursday and for Birmingham Bears to beat Gloucestershire on Friday - that’s available at 7/2 with bet365.
And finally, Sussex’s Tom Alsop may be batting down the order in Sussex’s T20 line-up - at number six - but he is their second leading Blast run-scorer this campaign with 337, including two fifties, behind Australian opener Daniel Hughes with 500-plus.
It wouldn’t completely amaze me to see him elevated up the order given his recent form. In his last six innings, in one-day and Championship cricket for Surrey and in the Hundred for Trent Rockets, he has posted scores of 108 not out, 51, 41 not out, 86 not out, 61 and 70.
That leads me to think a small stakes approach on him to be Sussex’s top run-scorer in the match at 5/1 with Betfred is worth considering.
