EFL Cup Tips and Predictions
West Ham to win and BTTS
It is not the most exciting clash in the EFL Cup second round, but Premier League club v Premier League club does at least mean there will be one fewer big team down the line, and in this instance I think it will be West Ham who advance with Bournemouth missing out.
The Hammers were impressive 2-0 winners at Crystal Palace on the opening day and given the signings they have made this summer, this should be a good opportunity for a few of them to bed in. Bournemouth have started okay without setting the world alight and it remains to be seen how they cope without the influence of Dominic Solanke.
Swansea to beat Wycombe
Swansea have shown signs of stepping up a gear this season after a full summer to learn Luke Williams’ style of play, even if they were pegged back by a late Cardiff equaliser on Sunday. I don’t think they will have any trouble getting past Wycome on Wednesday - they themselves have had a mixed start to their season.
Under 3.5 Goals - Nottingham Forest v Newcastle
While I think both sides will score in another all-Premier League clash, I am still expecting a low-scoring game. So far Newcastle’s two games this season have seen three goals combined, while Forest’s have also seen three. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a winner, but there will probably only be a goal in it if anything and I can’t see either side scoring more than twice.
Brentford to beat Colchester
This should be a relatively favourable draw for Brentford, who have made it beyond the second round in each of the past four seasons in the EFL Cup. They are a side who could be well-placed for a cup run this season, though the depths of their squad are likely to be tested with Ivan Toney deemed unavailable for selection while speculation over his future continues.
Colchester have had a mixed start to the season and beat Reading on penalties in the last round but a defeat to Harrogate at the weekend was not a good result.
