England v France Match Preview
If you could have guessed how the opening weekend of the Six Nations would pan out, you wouldn't have been far wrong.
France outclassed Wales on Friday night with pundits debating where Antoine Dupont sits in the pantheon of all-time rugby greats; England played really well for 50 minutes and led Ireland before falling away to a convincing defeat; Scotland had too much for Italy who put up a fight nontheless.
Ordinarily you would say that such scripted headlines reflect badly on the tournament, but it sets things up beuatifully what is arguably the standout weekend of this year's tournament.
I tipped England to surprise a few people last weekend so it was disappointing when things fell apart in the second half and that now-familiar collapse saw Ireland dominate and eventually overwhelm their opponents, but you still look at the way England played and think they're not that far away from seriously challenging.
They have the players to do it and have led in plenty of big games recently, but losing is a habit and you worry that needs to end sooner rather than later otherwise there could be changes in the pipeline.
A return to Twickenham this weekend should suit them, but there are question marks around how they have set up this weekend and it doesn't convince me I'm afraid, so I probably have less faith that they can turn their fortunes around this time.
Moving Marcus Smith to full-back is a clear nod to France's kicking game and the way they attack, and it will be interesting to see how much Smith runs with ball in hand and how much he kicks back, but the back-row changes look like they have potential.
Romain Ntamack is suspended for the visitors so Matthieu Jalibert makes his first start for a year, but the game will revolve around Antoine Dupont at nine and his box of tricks.
If he can exert the dominance that Jamison Gibson-Park showed last week - both with ball in hand and in his support lines - then I've no doubt he will push them over the line.
Given England's recent form and the trends, one price that really stands out immediately is for England to lead at half-time and lose come full-time. You can get that at 6/1 with BoyleSports which, given the form, looks a no-brainer.
I think Dupont will get on the scoresheet and it's just a matter of when not if, so back him to score in the first half at 7/2 with William Hill.
