Two rounds of the new Europa League format in the history books and Manchester United are yet to enjoy the sweet taste of success. An opening outing at home to FC Twente ending in a 1-1 draw and soon after, it was another stalemate being played out against Porto.
One that looked like it was going to spell the end of Erik ten Hag’s tenure as United manager and although the Red Devils raced into a 2-0 lead at the Estadio do Dragao, that advantage would then be flipped into a deficit later that same evening.
Two goals ahead converted to a goal behind with just five minutes of the second half played and by the time Bruno Fernandes was sent off with nine minutes remaining, United’s outlook had become even more gloomier.
However, it must be noted that United know a thing or two about late goals and this time it was defender Harry Maguire who was on hand to add his name to the legion of players who have scored in the dying seconds for the Red Devils.
A 3-3 draw and a result that allowed ten Hag more time in the Old Trafford hot seat and time that is yet to expire after he oversaw a 2-1 win at home to Brentford on Saturday – a win that was far from pretty, but with the way United have been playing that was always going to be asking too much.
The question is whether asking for a first Europa League win of the season on Thursday is too much and standing in the way of the perfect answer is Turkish outfit Fenerbahce as they open their Sukru Saracoglu Stadium doors.
Whereas United have two Europa League points in their account, Fenerbahce have double that amount. A Matchday 1 clash with Belgian outfit Union Saint Gilloise saw a certain Jose Mourinho lead his charges to a 2-1 win at home thanks to goals from Caglar Soyuncu and Christian Burgess.
Fast forward to Matchday 2 and Mourinho and his players had to make do with their own 1-1 draw with FC Twente and with that additional point on the board, Fenerbahce start Matchday 3 sitting 13th in the extended league table.
Now though, it is time for the self-anointed special one to remind one of his former employers what he is capable of and after exiting Old Trafford in rather acrimonious circumstances, overseeing a home in on Thursday would be rather special in itself.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and this is where I think the Mourinho effect will be in full effect. Add his cunning to a rapturous home crowd and the home win and over 2.5 goals at odds of 4/1 with William Hill seems rather appealing.
In addition to this, Fenerbahce’s squad looks like a who’s who of former Premier League players and with former Southampton star Dusan Tadic amongst their ranks, I am also backing him to score the opening goal at odds of 23/2 with Unibet.
