Wessel Nijman to beat Joe Cullen 3-2
Wessel Nijman was made to sweat in his opening game against Cameron Carolissen, but eventually saw off the challenge of the South African, scraping through 3-2 with a 95 average.
He showed glimmers of why many think he will go far in this tournament, but the 24-year-old has been thrown to the deep end in round two against the experienced and former TV title winner Joe Cullen.
Cullen has had a poor couple of years on the tour but experience at the Ally Pally in front of the unique crowd can be priceless.
Another nip and tuck match is expected here with each player holding their throw early on, but Nijman’s raw talent should come through in the crunch legs.
Ross Smith to win the 1st Set & hit 3+ 180s in the 1st Set vs Paolo Nebrida
Ross Smith is another dark horse that could go far this year.
The former European Championship winner made major quarter-finals and semi-finals this year and has been handed a plum draw against Paolo Nebrida.
The Filipino qualifier was accurate on his doubling despite averaging a lowly 87 in his 3-2 win over the out of sorts Jim Williams, but an upset over Smith is a bridge too far.
We’re backing a fast start from “Smudger” who will be eager to show his class.
Gary Anderson to win & throw 6+ 180s vs Jeffrey de Graaf
Since winning back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016, Gary Anderson has continued to knock at the door for more.
He has reached two more finals, two semis and a quarter, but this 2025 probably offers him the best opportunity to make it number three.
Only Luke Littler and Luke Humphries are playing better than the Scot, and an opening cruise-control win over Jeffrey de Graaf is expected on Sunday.
The Swede is up to number 81 in the world, but nowhere near the level or high-speed of the “Flying Scotsman”.
