Ryan Joyce 3-2 Darius Labanauskas
A lot of water has passed under the bridge since Darius Labanausakas’ surprise run to the quarter-finals of the 2020 World Championship.
Since that season, the Lithuanian player has struggled to make a dent in the major TV tournaments, not qualifying for many and dropping down to number 159 in the world.
His nine-darter in 2021 still means he’s a memorable face at the Ally Pally, but he’s been drawn a stinker of a first-round tie against Ryan Joyce – who is the sixth best non-seeded player at the tournament.
Joyce reached the semi-finals of the World Grand Prix and the quarter-finals of the Players Championship Finals this year and up to 33 in the world will fancy a couple of wins in the Palace this year.
Labanauskas will enjoy happy memories of the oche and receive good support, but Joyce should be able to sneak through.
Jeffrey de Graaf – Over 2.5 180s vs Rashad Sweeting
Rashad Sweeting makes history on Tuesday becoming the first player from the Bahamas to play at the World Championships and we’d be lying if we knew how he was going to play…
Sweeting qualified through the Championship Darts Latin America and Caribbean Order of Merit but will probably feel like a fish out of water up on the daunting Ally Pally oche.
Jeffrey de Graaf has done this all before – three times in fact – and after a positive season on tour (including two third-round ranking runs, a quarter-final at the World Cup of Darts and a runner-up finish at the 10th Players Championship floor event) should have the game to brush Sweeting aside.
The minimum number of legs this can be over in is nine, so de Graaf should have at least three maximums in his locker.
Ryan Meikle Win Match, Most 180s & Highest Checkout vs Fallon Sherrock
Fallon Sherrock is still the only woman to have won a match at the PDC World Darts Championship, but it will take a bit of a surprise if she is going to win another one in 2024.
The 30-year-old “Queen of the Palace” has fallen at the first stage in her last three outings here, and without too much to shout about on the PDC circuit this season, her opponent Ryan Meikle starts as a big favourite.
Sherrock reached the final of the Women’s Matchplay this season losing out to Beau Greaves but Ryan Meikle has run well at the UK Open and Players Championship Finals – at a much higher level.
Meikle should be able to record the clean sweep here even with the crowd against him.
