Ollie Watkins’ late strike against the Netherlands put the pre-tournament favourites through to the final against a Spain side heavily fancied to be crowned champions, particularly following a sumptuous performance against France on Friday in the first semi-final.

Spain v England Match Preview
Anyone who saw England play in the early stages of Euro 2024 would have doubted they would make it to this stage, but there were real signs against the Netherlands that Gareth Southgate has finally found the magic formula to match performance with results in this summer’s tournament.
England were heavily tipped pre-tournament to reach this stage, but the turgid nature and uncertainty in the performances raised doubts over whether they could get there despite the star quality throughout the squad.
Nevertheless, Southgate has once again successfully navigated his way through the knockout rounds at a major tournament to leave England one game away from history.
And there is real confidence that with Jude Bellingham’s overhead kick, a penalty shootout win and Watkins’ super late strike, that England are destined to lift the trophy on Sunday night.
That feeling is boosted by the first-half performance against the Netherlands, with Phil Foden replicating his club form on the biggest stage, Kobbie Mainoo playing with the freedom rarely seen from an England midfielder and Bukayo Saka turning defenders inside and out, leaving much for Spain to ponder ahead of the final.
While many England fans have been critical of the approach through the tournament, there is no doubt that Spain will be fearful of England and the threats they pose.
They will have a few weapons of their own to unleash though, and do go into the game as favourites with the bookies and undoubtedly the standout team of the tournament thanks to the style and verve they have played with.
The obvious dangermen are Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, who were superb in the 2-1 win over France and have been threats throughout the tournament with their pace, trickery and direct running from the wings.
Yamal’s wondergoal against France was the obvious headline-grabber, and it will be interesting to see whether Southgate sticks with Trippier on the left, with his right foot favouring Yamal’s signature move of cutting in onto his left.
Unsurprisingly with a Spanish team, they also possess plenty of threat and control in midfield. Dani Olmo is arguably an underrated but brilliant player, with his goal on Friday an example of the technical and attacking qualities he possesses. Declan Rice will have a hard evening stopping the likes of Olmo, Rodri and Fabian Ruiz from dominating the game.
Unfortunately for England fans, it is in midfield that I can see Spain having too much and ultimately controlling the game. England have fallen behind in each of their last three matches, and I think that pattern will continue as Spain score first and suffocate the game, leading at half-time and then at full-time which is priced at 10/3 with bet365.
I don’t think Spain will have it all their own way though. With the players they have I think they can cause plenty of problems, and Spain’s defence isn’t exactly watertight, even if Dani Carvajal’s return on the right will be a big boost.
Marc Cucurella is an obvious player to exploit, and Foden showed against the Netherlands that he can drop into those pockets between the centre-back and full-back, turn and cause real problems. He will have been really frustrated not to have made the direct impact he’d have wanted to in this tournament, but I think Foden will finally get on the scoresheet in a Spain win on Sunday, which is priced at 27/1 with Paddy Power.
