West Indies v New Zealand Match Preview
I don’t expect the West Indies to go on and win this title, I just don’t see beyond Australia for that. But I do think they will get the better of New Zealand in this semi-final.
They look to be on a roll and have real momentum, which is crucial in short-form cricket, and to me they have more match-winners than the Kiwis do.
Captain Hayley Matthews for one, Deandra Dottin and Afy Fletcher. And we haven’t even mentioned Qiana Joseph, who sent England home with 52 off 38 balls on Tuesday.
Both sides won three of their four group matches, but West Indies finished top Group B and New Zealand second in Group A.
Betfred have West Indies at 11/8 to win this one, a price I’d be taking.
Will New Zealand make a Melie of this semi?
Heading into the semi-finals, leg-spinner Amelia (Melie to her mates) Kerr was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 10. An all-rounder who bats at three, she’s a superstar of the women’s game.
A talismanic figure for New Zealand, she has returned 1-19, 4-26, 2-13 and 3-14. If they are going to overcome an on-song West Indies, I think she needs to shine.
I would be taking the 1/1 bet365 are offering on Kerr to take two wickets in this match.
In each of the last three matches at this World Cup - Australia v India, Pakistan v New Zealand and England v West Indies - there have been at least two run outs. In that Australia v India game, there were four!
With that in mind, I’d be siding with betfair’s 5/4 on there to be over 1.5 run outs in this semi-final. Increased pressure and all, I can see things getting hectic.
I do think New Zealand captain Sophie Devine is quality even if she hasn’t had an amazing tournament - one fifty in four matches. But I’d be siding with her to be their top batter in this match at 10/3 with Sporting Index.
She bats at four, and I can see her forced into a recovery job following early wickets.
And, finally, I like the look of Qiana Joseph to top-score again for the West Indies. I’m not just jumping on the bandwagon following a fifty the other day, more so that I just think 5/1 with BetVictor is too juicy on a powerful opener in form who could win this market quickly.
I wouldn’t be piling in on that price, admittedly. If I was you, I’d be taking a small stakes approach.
