The boxing schedule throws up a mix of the weird, wild and the wonderful this weekend, with Jake Paul, Tommy Fury, Aaron Chalmers and Floyd Mayweather all taking to the ring.
From YouTube beef, to exhibitions, via WBC title fights – there is literally something for everyone this weekend.
As much as we’d like to, we can’t bet on Floyd Mayweather’s return against a former Geordie Shore contestant (wtf?!) but Paul vs Fury’s card in Saudi Arabia and a vacant IBF 140lbs title fight in Minneapolis combines to build our Big Boxing Acca instead.
Boxing Acca Tips - 8/1 Bet for Saturday
Check out the legs here:
10pm, Sunday - Jake Paul to beat Tommy Fury - 4/5
Listen, we’re in the dark as much as anyone when it comes to this fight.
It’s a real stab in the dark between a multi-millionaire YouTuber that has been able to invest in the best head-start possible in boxing, and a guy who has incredible fighting family DNA but is yet to have a meaning fight of note.
But we can only go off what we have seen previously, and Paul has looked better in defeating better opposition.
Sure, you can underline the fact that none of Paul’s opponents have been pro boxers, but Fury’s opponents have had combined losses well into the 100s and are barely clinging onto a career in the fight game.
Jake Paul will need to improve his jab if he is to break the early guard of Tommy Fury, but if he can stay away from the boxer’s right hand, then we fancy him to get the job done on the cards over eight rounds.
8.30pm, Sunday - Ilunga Makabu to beat Badou Jack by KO, TKO or Disqualification - 11/5
Badou Jack is never in boring fights – but that can often come to his detriment.
The American former world champion is coming towards the end of his career and is pretty new into cruiserweight waters.
Ilunga Makabu has also been around a while but is more seasoned at the 200lbs limit and hasn’t lost since being knocked out by Tony Bellew in 2016.
Jack has only won one of his last five meaningful fights – we are ignoring his previous run of 5-0 mainly across the UAE – and this looks too big and too strong of a test for him at this stage of his career.
3am Sunday - Subriel Matias to beat Jeremias Ponce by KO, TKO or Disqualification at 1/2
We’re expecting an explosive fun fight in Minneapolis.
Both Matias and Ponce have fan-friendly styles and a lot of punches are going to be thrown in this race to the IBF title at super-lightweight.
Subriel Matias’ power is clear: he has stopped his opponent in all 18 of his victories, and we expect Ponce’s name to be added to this list.
Ponce is unbeaten but has only fought across Europe and Argentina.
Matias is growing a good resume and should move to 19-1 this weekend.
