Amidst the special things achieved by England in 2022, they had a disappointing time of it in one-day internationals.

Yes, they won the T20 World Cup, and yes, the Test team won nine of 10 Test Matches under new a new captain and coach. But England only won one of four ODI series, that coming against the Netherlands away.

They lost to India at home and Australia away. Sandwiched in between was a 1-1 drawn series at home with South Africa.

Despite the return of Jofra Archer, England’s squad looks a bit light on bowling. For example, I’m not sure Olly Stone, Reece Topley and David Willey would be in my strongest team, and they are all in a 14-man squad.

South Africa look like they are giving this series their full attention, with the Proteas pretty much at full strength as they also look to bounce back from a disappointing 2022, which included a home defeat against Bangladesh, having earlier beaten India.

Captain Temba Bavuma has names such as de Kock, Maharaj, Markram, Miller, Ngidi, Nortje, Rabada and Shamsi at his disposal.

There are doubts over both sides, but South Africa look stronger on paper, and all of their players have been playing a high level of cricket on home soil over the last few weeks in the SAT20.

I would therefore be taking the 7/4 on offer with bet365 on them to win the series.

What a winter Harry Brook has had, winning the T20 World Cup and scoring his first three Test centuries in Pakistan before Christmas.

He will make his ODI debut in this series, and I expect him to bat four or five in England’s order. I like the 9/2 bet365 have on him to be England’s top run-scorer in the series.

So, let’s now concentrate on the opening ODI in Bloemfontein, the venue for the first two matches.

Given I think South Africa will win the series, I also expect them to get off to a winning start in game one - they are 13/8 with Betfair to do so.

England scored 399-9 here in 2016, but the average score across 31 one-day internationals in Bloem’ is just 239. That makes me think it could be slow, bringing spin into the equation.

Adil Rashid has taken nine wickets in seven T20s for Pretoria Capitals in the ongoing SAT20, going wicketless in only one of those games.

He also took seven wickets in his last three ODIs last year, including 3-29 v South Africa at Old Trafford.

The mercurial leg-spinner is 1/1 with Ladbrokes to take over 1.5 wickets in this match.

Looking at bet365′s odds, it surprises me that he is as long as 15/4 to be England’s top bowler in this fixture. I would be siding with that price.
