League Two 2022/23 Season Predictions, Betting Tips & Preview

25/1, 16/1, 9/2 and 9/2 tips ahead of the new League Two season

The week that fans of EFL clubs have been waiting for, this weekend sees the start of a new season in the Championship, League One and League Two. We will be previewing all three leagues over the course of the next three days, with League One coming on Tuesday, followed by the Championship on Friday.

League Two is where we begin, and purely from a betting point of view, is certainly the most interesting of the three leagues to look at. We’ve got two picks that are double figure odds and the feeling is that whatever you fancy in this league, barring one or two bets, you are going to get big odds on your selections.

So, here are the League Two season predictions, and where our money is going ahead of the new season kicking off.

Rovers a Huge Price to Bounce Back to League One

In terms of value, let’s dive straight in with Doncaster Rovers and their promotion hopes, with Rovers available at what looks to be a big 16/1 to win League Two. Relegated from League One last season, Rovers are a big price to go straight back up, for two reasons. The first is that they performed a lot better from January onwards last season, when they tried to get out of an impossible position by signing a few players. Secondly, they’ve done well in the transfer market this summer too, and may well have jumped on striker George Miller ahead of his breakout season, which will certainly give them the goals they need to compete at the top end of the table, if that happens.

Let’s split Doncaster’s performance last season into two halves. First 23 games, they took 16 points, and were struggling desperately. In came January signings, and Rovers took 22 points from their last 23 games. Had they replicated that in the first half, 44 points would have been enough to stay up in League One.

Their squad from that campaign has been kept together pretty much, with a few nice additions alongside, which has really caught my attention when looking through the League Two battle.

Yes, there are a couple of negatives, including how the mood is around the camp after being relegated last season and the fact that Gary McSheffrey still has a little to prove, especially if the team do start well, and for the first time, he’s coaching with a bit of pressure on his back. However, that is of course factored into the price, and at 16/1 they offer more than enough value for me to get involved.

For those looking for something a little lower with more chance of winning, Doncaster are 9/2 to be promoted, again offering fair value. Their attendances should hold up pretty well, and if they are close when we hit January, don’t be surprised to see them push hard and try to strengthen their squad.

Honourable mentions go to Bradford City and Stockport County for promotion. Bradford have had a total revamp of their team this summer, and with Mark Hughes at the helm, they have a big name to lead them forward. I worry how long it will take them to click, but if they hit the ground running then look out for them to make a splash in League Two this season.

Elsewhere, in the past we’ve seen teams make a strong push in League Two after promotion from the National League, and Stockport look well set up to do that this season. They’ve added in quality players for this league, have great momentum behind their challenge, and could well push for back to back promotions.

Bad Summer Could Spell Trouble for Hartlepool

Down at the bottom of the table, Hartlepool is where I am looking when it comes to teams who may struggle. It is not too uncommon for teams in League Two to lose players and look thin over the summer, but with Hartlepool, it could really have an impact. Key players have left for rival League Two clubs, had you taken them out of their team last season, no way would they have finished 17th like they did.

Of course, like with many, money is at a premium, and other than dropping incredibly lucky with a couple of loan players, I’m not sure how Hartlepool really kick forward and avoid the relegation scrap this season. They’ve had a bad pre-season, cancelled a game because they didn’t have enough players, and now have the task of bedding in newcomers, so don’t be surprised to see them start slowly. Should that happen, as we all know, getting out is not easy.

The 9/2 on Hartlepool to be relegated appeals to me, they seem to be lacking in quality, have taken a step back from last season, and on top of that, haven’t really had the best summer to get themselves ready.

Hemmings Can Fire Tranmere Forward

Rounding off our look at League Two, it is time to head into the top goalscorer market. A tough one to sort out, as more challengers could arrive in the form of loan deals over the coming weeks. However, for now, 25/1 shot Kane Hemmings stands out as having a great chance to be in the mix here.

Arriving in January at Tranmere from Burton Albion, Hemmings played 22 games for Rovers in the second half of the season, scoring eight goals. Considering he arrived half way through the season, I thought that was an impressive return. With a summer under his belt to truly integrate into the team, he could well have an even stronger record this time around.

Eight goals from 22 games translates to almost 20 in a full campaign, with Hemmings expected to play a big part in Tranmere’s promotion push, and be a big part of their attacking plans. With a bit more luck, and after the summer really learning how his team plays around him, 20 is certainly a reachable target for the 30-year-old.

In years gone by, he’s been close, with 15 from 37 for Mansfield and 14 from 36 for Notts County, while if you go back two years, he scored 15 from 36 in League One for Burton Albion.

Tranmere look set for a decent season, which will all help Hemmings. He looks capable of 20 goals if he stays fit, and that should be enough to put him in the mix. At 25/1 with BetVictor, he looks a fair play on the scorer market, especially as they offer each way betting for the first four players. The top four scorers last season bagged 25, 23, 22 and 19, so if it is the same this time around, 20 gets Hemmings a spot in the top four.
