Aston Villa v Tottenham Match Preview
Tottenham must park up their EFL Cup semi-final disappointment when they take on Aston Villa in the FA Cup Fourth Round at Villa Park on Sunday evening.
The FA Cup remains Tottenham’s only realistic chance of landing any silverware after they were thumped 4-0 in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final away to Liverpool on Thursday.
Ange Postecoglou’s men fell flat at Anfield, as the Reds were rampant in the second half with goals from Mohamed Salah (penalty), Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk securing an emphatic victory for the Merseyside giants.
Villa, however, are six places above Tottenham (eighth) in the league, but they had a dismal evening away to strugglers Wolves, losing 2-0 at Molineux.
Clashes between Villa and Tottenham are invariably exciting, but how will this match unfold? I’ve unearthed some betting tips to sit alongside my Aston Villa v Tottenham predictions.
Tottenham’s week to end on a flat note
You may have been fooled into thinking that Tottenham had turned a corner when they saw off Brentford last weekend to arrest a seven-match winless streak.
They looked defensively more compact at the Gtech Community Stadium, and spirits would have been high going to Anfield.
However, such hopes were deflated as Liverpool monopolised possession and Tottenham were barely able to lay a glove.
Even the introduction of deadline day signing Mathys Tel did little to overturn the Red tide as Liverpool punched their ticket to Wembley.
Villa, meantime, are a curious case. Generally organised under Unai Emery, the Wolves result was a setback, but they are in the Champions League Round of 16.
Interestingly, Villa have won just one of their past six FA Cup ties against Tottenham, and that was a third-round replay in 1992 at White Hart Lane (1-0).
Villa are also looking to reach the fifth round for the first time since the 2014/15 season where they eventually lost to Arsenal in the final.
Tottenham’s last visit to Villa ended in a 4-0 win, but their confidence will have taken a hit.
So, for the first of my Aston Villa Tottenham predictions, I’m going with Villa to win both halves which is available at 16/5 with Betfred.
Pedro Porro to have his name taken in the book
Tottenham have been decimated by injuries, so much so that they could have a starting XI of players that are out.
For large chunks, they were hanging on against Liverpool, and Villa will be a tough test as they are swift on the counter with the likes of Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins.
In the most recent clash which resulted in a resounding 4-1 win for Tottenham, it was a clean game with just two yellow cards brandished.
However, one of the players cautioned was Pedro Porro. To round off my tips, I’ve tucked into a special and that is for Porro to be the first player to be booked, and that is trading at a sumptuous 14/1 with bet365.
