After a 7-0 shellacking at the hands of Nottingham Forest, Brighton have a much-needed break from Premier League duties this weekend in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The Seagulls welcome Chelsea to the AMEX in a Saturday night fixture attempting to get into the fifth round of the cup for the 6th time in eight seasons, whereas Chelsea are chasing a ninth FA Cup having last won it in 2018.
There’s a spiky recent history between these two clubs with the Blues pinching a plethora of Brighton talent – will their young coach Fabian Hurzeler have the last laugh on Saturday night?
Brighton and Chelsea have developed somewhat of a rivalry over the past few seasons.
Transfers of Moises Caicedo, Robert Sanchez and Marc Cucurella – not forgetting ex-manager Graham Potter – raised eyebrows on the south coast, with Chelsea’s flexing of their wallet not translating to dominance on the pitch...
It’s just four wins in the last nine meetings for Chelsea over Brighton, with both teams scoring in seven of these encounters, and with 14 goals across their last three matches we are expecting plenty of entertainment at the AMEX on Saturday.
Leaky defences
With injuries and out-of-form goalkeepers to cope with, Chelsea's defence has taken a bit of a battering over the winter.
The Blues have kept only one clean sheet (to Morecambe) in their last eight matches, and are finding ways to throw away leads on a constant basis.
Their away form started strong this campaign, and finding the net in 14 of their 17 games on the road this season will give them confidence, but keeping Brighton out is another story.
Hurzeler's side will still be licking their wounds following a 7-0 loss to Nottingham Forest last weekend and with just one home win in eight will be concerned as Chelsea come to town.
In a game that could resemble a basketball match at times, Over 3.5 goals at 11/8 with Betfred looks good.
Palmer, again
If Chelsea score, the Cole Palmer is usually involved.
Chelsea’s talisman has 20 goal involvements in the Premier League already this season and will be relied upon more and more as the goals begin to dry up for Nicholas Jackson.
He bagged four in Chelsea’s 4-2 win over the Seagulls back in September and has scored or assisted in seven of his last 12 appearances in blue.
