Celtic v Hibernian Match Preview
In a week where Rangers’ path to the Champions League has been blocked for another season, Celtic are showing their financial might as Scottish Premiership champions. Might that comes in the form of Adam Idah’s signature from Norwich at a cost of £9.5m.
Whether the permanent capture of the Irish international is worth the money is a point being contested by Celtic supporters but there is no doubt that the return of Idah only highlights the further financial gulf between the Old Firm.
With Rangers’ budget looking a lot slimmer these days, not to mention funds going into a protracted refurbishment at Ibrox – one that sees Philippe Clement’s men currently plying their trade at Hampden Park, it is fair to say the balance of Glasgow power is with Celtic.
While it is not just financial might that Celtic have displayed in the past seven days, it is might on the field of play and after getting the better of Hibernian on enemy territory last Sunday, the two teams meet again at the Hoops’ home ground in a rather quick turnaround.
Last Sunday saw Brendan Rodgers’ side cruise to a 2-0 win to keep their 100% start to the league campaign intact - one that already sees them two points clear of Rangers, thanks to goals from Nicolas Kuhn and Callum McGregor at Easter Road.
Another reason for Celtic to celebrate, but another reason for Hibernian to commiserate and although they managed to qualify out of the Scottish League Cup group stage largely unscathed – accounting for defeat to League 1 Kelty Hearts, their league output has not been as productive.
Not only is it the aforementioned defeat to Sunday’s hosts but there was also an opening weekend reverse at the hands of St Mirren. Not the start to the Premiership that new manager David Gray would have wanted and certainly not the start Hibs’ fans would have wanted either.
Considering the club finished on the wrong side of the top six split last season, it is not a position that the club will want to be in come the end of the season and especially now that it is part of the same club network as Premier League outfit Bournemouth.
With the influence of American Bill Foley behind the scenes, being a club outside the top six will simply not work in the long-term and because of that, you also have to wonder whether manager David Gray will be there for the long-term as well.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and first up, I am going to back that the game has under two goals at odds of 5/1 – It is a slightly ambiguous tip when on the hunt for the value, but it does tie nicely into my second tip.
In addition to this, I am also going to back a Celtic win by a single goal in 90 minutes. With it being a Scottish League Cup game, they won’t need to break too much sweat, and the visitors need to show some form of resolution in defeat. Therefore, I am backing a 1-0 home win at odds of 8/1.
