Chelsea v Wolves Match Preview
Chelsea will look to arrest their downturn in form when they tackle strugglers Wolves in the Premier League on Monday evening.
The Blues were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth last week, needing a late Reece James free-kick to spare their blushes. More disconcertingly, it was their fifth league game without a win.
Only a month or so ago, the West London outfit were quietly being talked up as potential title contenders, but currently, they find themselves out of the top four.
Wolves, on the other hand, had got off to a decent start in the Vitor Pereira era, picking up seven points in their first three games under the Portuguese tactician. But back-to-back 3-0 defeats against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle has deflated the initial feel-good factor and resurfaced relegation fears.
There is no such thing as home bankers anymore, and Wolves will be eager to make amends for a 6-2 hammering at the hands of Chelsea back in August.
But what can we expect? I’ve dived into the betting markets and lined up some odds to sit alongside my Chelsea v Wolves predictions.
Chelsea to distribute Capital punishment
The slump in form by Chelsea will not have gone unnoticed, but perhaps it was bound to happen at some point.
Inevitably, the rebuilding project under Enzo Maresca will take time. It wasn’t going to be an overnight success, but there are some concerning stats I wish to draw your attention to.
Firstly, just 43% of Chelsea’s league points collected this season (16/37) is the lowest share in the division. Added to that, their current winless streak is their longest in nearly two years when they went seven games between March and May 2003 without a victory.
Wolves, on the other hand, have looked limp in their past couple of games. After successive 3-0 defeats, they will be aiming to avoid the unenviable record of becoming the first side since Nottingham Forest in 1910 to lose three top-flight games in a calendar year by three or more goals.
Although Chelsea could drop to seventh by the time they kick off against Wolves if other results go against them, I think they will get over their recent slump and produce a workmanlike display.
I’m drawn to the Chelsea to win to nil line, and Parimatch has dished up a tempting price of 7/4.
Wolves to sing the Blues
Going forward, Chelsea have an arsenal of attacking talent at their display.
Cole Palmer has already had 20 goal involvements in the league this term (14 goals and six assists). Whereas, Nicolas Jackson, who has nine league goals to his name this campaign, had seven attempts against Bournemouth, his joint-most in a league game without hitting the target.
Holding onto leads has been problematic for Chelsea of late as demonstrated against Fulham, Crystal Palace, and Bournemouth.
But against an ailing Wolves side, I don’t think Chelsea should have too many problems.
While the Correct Score prediction can be laden with danger, to round off my Chelsea Wolves predictions, I’m going with Maresca’s men to clinch a 2-0 victory that carries odds of 9/1 with bet365.
