We’re at the stage of the Olympics where every day there is some sort of drama, and that’s no different in the football where we have the first knockout rounds taking place on Friday.
France and Argentina meet in the evening kick-off in a surprise quarter-final, with the two pre-tournament favourites meeting earlier than expected and setting up a mouth-watering prospect in Bordeaux.

France to win and BTTS
Argentina had their issues in the group stages, and finishing second meant they have to take on France in the quarters - definitely earlier than they would have expected. These two were the pre-tournament favourites so I expect an entertaining game on Friday with goals at either end but ultimately, a France win.
BTTS - Morocco v USA
Had Morocco backed up their win over Argentina throughout the groups, I would be having them to win this one. However they tailed off and lost to Ukraine, while USA finished strongly which means this is a really tough one to call. Both sides have been full of goals so far though, so if there’s one thing to bank on it should be goals.
Egypt to win
Egypt finished top of their group involving Spain with an unbeaten record, beating the European champions 2-1 in the final group game. I am slightly surprised that they are slightly longer odds than Paraguay - who finished second to Japan - for this one, so I’m leaning their way.

Over 3.5 goals
France have been pretty frugal so far in this tournament, keeping clean sheets in each of their three games to date. That will change against Argentina however, who are by far the strongest side they will have faced so far. It is a repeat of the World Cup final and I think the two best squads on paper in the competition, I expect goals and plenty of quality.
Both teams to score
The attacking talent on display is very exciting. Michael Olise, Alexandre Lacazette, Desire Doue and Jean-Philippe Mateta are the France players we have tipped to take them all the way since the start, while Argentina have Julian Alvarez and the very exciting Thiago Almada in their ranks. They should be able to breach the French defence for the first time.
France to win
We have seen throughout the Olympics that home support has already counted for a lot in France’s favour, and I think they will edge through this game. They are my tip to go all the way so while they’ll be tested, I think France have enough about them to get the win.
Jean-Philippe Mateta to score
After a fine season for Crystal Palace, I expected Mateta to have a bigger impact on this tournament than he has. He went goalless in the opening two games before finally opening his account against New Zealand, and I think he will build on that here. He will have a tough day against Nicolas Otamendi, but I fancy him to nick another goal.
