If France are to make it all the way to the final, their level of performance is going to have to improve after a lacklustre showing in the group stage.

France v Belgium Match Preview
In all the pre-tournament guides that have been written, the winners of Group B were marked down as France. With them being the nation that has reached the last two World Cup finals – winning one of them and also getting to the final of Euro 2016 on home soil, you can understand why.
However, all those pre-tournament guides would have been incorrect and although the sight of Les Blues not being on the first rung of Group B’s ladder would have been a surprise, there was an even greater surprise when Austria ended up as winners of the four team league.
A scenario which has not only given the French a different path to the final than expected but has also deprived everyone of a potential semi-final with England. Now if the two nations separated by the English Channel are to meet, they can only do so at the tournament’s showpiece event.
However, even that statement has to be steeped in an element of wishful thinking and with the way Didier Deschamps’ men have performed in Germany thus far, it is far from the usual levels that you would come to expect.
The expectation as before has been placed on the shoulders of Kylian Mbappe and although he scored from the spot against Poland in the group stage, so did counterpart Robert Lewandowski and it was that stalemate coupled with Austria’s win over the Netherlands which leaves us here.
It leaves us with France going up against linguistic and geographical neighbours Belgium and with Domenico Todesco’s men also making heavy going of trying to get out of the group stage, both sides need to find an ignition spark in the knockout phase.
In fairness to the French, Group B was arguably the second toughest of the six and because of the relative quality of opponent, you could offer mitigating circumstances as to why they dropped four points from the nine on offer.
If you are being critical towards the Belgians, they had a far easier group on paper and after only winning one of their three matches - not to mention losing their tournament opener against Slovakia, their route to the Round of 16 has been even less inspiring.
Even with Manchester City pair Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku doing their best to create chances, the toil of Romelu Lukaku trying to put them away has been one of the subplots of this tournament and if Belgium are to move to the last eight, he will need to find his shooting boots.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with neither nation looking rather inspiring, I think this encounter is going to be light on goals. However, I think France will do just enough to edge this in 90 minutes and I am backing Les Blues to win and under 2.5 total goals at 6/1.
In addition to this, I am going to back Antoine Griezmann to score. However, to squeeze even more value out of this proposition, I am backing the Atletico Madrid forward to score in the first half only. An outcome that is currently priced at 9/1.
