Georgia v Portugal Match Preview
Not Over Yet
If you were to have a discussion regarding the outright favourites in Germany, the Portuguese national team is unlikely to be a part of it. At the same time, if you were to label Roberto Martinez’s men as a dark horse, that would be doing them something of a disservice.
Therefore, when you look at the list of candidates, Portugal find themselves lying awkwardly in between these two brackets. At the same time, there has been nothing awkward regarding the number of Group F points they have collected to date.
Six up for grabs, six on the board and although there was a slight element of toil against the Czech Republic in their first encounter, victory over Turkey on Saturday was far more plain sailing for the 2016 champions.
Eight years ago it was Cristiano Ronaldo pulling the strings as Portugal stumbled through to the final and although the record international goalscorer had to watch the most important part from the sidelines, there is no doubt that his overall contribution played a huge role in their success.
Now though, there is a sense that the supporting cast are being given far more prominent roles in the play and that is not to say Ronaldo’s own talents have been downgraded or diminished, more a sense of less being placed on his shoulders.
Those shoulders are now able to lift up the likes of Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes and with their roles in the team being pivotal in Portugal’s first two tournament wins, there is the potential to turn the intensity down a notch against Georgia.
Already assured of finishing top of Group F and knowing when and where they will play in the Round of 16, Portugal do not need to break sweat against the Georgians and that will be music to the ears of the tournament debutants.
Unfortunate not to get anything from their tournament bow against Turkey and desperately unlucky not to snatch a late winner against the Czech Republic just a few days later, this highlights the experience that Willy Sagnol’s men are currently lacking.
With that said, the experience they have had in Germany will certainly aid any future qualification attempts and although there are some detractors of a 24-team European Championships, the opportunity afforded to the likes of Georgia can be considered as one of its positives.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips, and I am going to throw caution to the wind and back a draw at odds of 4/1. Portugal have nothing to play for, Georgia need something to keep their hopes alive and therefore, I have decided to back the stalemate.
In addition to this, I will opt for a correct score bet and with the first tip being a draw, there are only a handful of realistic options. The most realistic in my opinion is the game ending with a goal each and this outcome is priced at 9/1.
