Greece v England Match Preview
Before Greece made their recent trip to Wembley, it looked as if Lee Carsley was the permanent England manager in wait. That was until the former Everton midfielder oversaw one of the biggest and most recent shocks in international football.
The Three Lions with nothing that resembled a roar on a rain-sodden October evening in London, their Greek opponents playing with the pride of a nation and one that paid its respects to George Baldock in the best way possible.
A stunning 2-1 defeat for England was enough for interim boss Carsley to fluff his live job interview and although he is still in the position for the rest of this current Nations League cycle, that will not be the case at the start of next year.
A new year, a new manager of the English national team and the third time in which a foreign candidate has scooped the job. The man in question is Thomas Tuchel and his brief is as simple as possible – get to the 2026 edition of the World Cup and more importantly, win it.
That brief cannot get started for another couple of months but the brief surrounding further progress in the Nations League is yet to completed and because of last month’s defeat to Greece, the task has become more difficult.
Difficult but not impossible either. A top-two finish is already all but secured and although that would offer the reward of a promotion play-off with a League A nation, topping League B2 would offer the winners automatic access to the league above.
Which means England must eat into Greece’s three-point gap at the top of the standings and they have two games in which to do so. A draw in Athens would put the balance of power within the hands of Thursday night’s hosts, a win would conclude proceedings in their favour.
A scenario that adds an element of jeopardy that is usually missing from encounters such as this and although this is not a competition that can be considered as a major international tournament, those involved will still want to compete against Europe’s true elite where possible.
Then again, there is no doubt that Lee Carsley and his players took Greece far too lightly just a few weeks ago and if they make the same mistakes in just a few hours, they could just as easily be punished for the second time in quick succession.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and although the visitors will have to deal with plenty of absences, there should still be enough personnel to right October’s wrong and therefore, I am backing the away win and over 2.5 goals at odds of 5/2 with bet365.
In addition to this, I think both teams will get on the scoresheet on Thursday night – especially as over 2.5 goals have already been suggested. With this in mind, I am also going to back a 2-1 away win at odds of 8/1 again with bet365.
