Inter v Arsenal Match Preview
For all the talk that Arsenal would finally scale the Premier League’s mountain top this season, their planned climb to the summit has looked more like a descent to base at present and they find themselves seven points behind their destination.
Admittedly there are still three quarters of this new season remaining and although Mikel Arteta’s men are playing catchup to both Liverpool and Manchester City above, any white flags are yet to be waved in the red half of North London.
Especially when you consider how the Gunners have started this newly expanded Champions League format and although this is a club that has had recent domestic woes, they have hardly put a foot wrong on the continent.
They may be seven points off the pace in the Premier League, but they have managed to pick seven points from the first nine on offer in Europe and after settling for a draw at Atalanta in Matchday 1, they have since won at home against both PSG and Shakhtar.
An unbeaten run on the continent and no Champions League goals conceded by David Raya and the defenders that stand in front of him - a defensive streak that will certainly be tested by Inter on Wednesday.
At the same time, Wednesday’s hosts will also look to protect their own clean sheet streak in Europe and after playing out a goalless draw with Manchester City on Matchday 1, Simone Inzaghi’s men have since got the better of Crvena Zvzeda and Young Boys.
A 4-0 demolition job of the Serbian outfit on home soil, quickly followed by a 1-0 win in Switzerland and as one of seven teams on seven points, the Italian outfit currently finds itself lying seventh in the Champions League table.
Two positions higher than an Arsenal side that have scored two goals less than their midweek opponents, but it was only one goal that was the difference during their weekend defeat to Newcastle at St James’ Park.
The Gunners misfired on Tyneside as Martin Odegaard’s absence hampered them once again and with the Norwegian potentially in the fold for Wednesday’s clash with Inter, his return for Arsenal manager Arteta cannot come soon enough.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and because these two teams have such good defensive records, it is difficult to envisage a winner at first and plenty of goals to go with it. Therefore, I am backing the draw and under 2.5 total goals at odds of 14/5 with betway.
In addition to this, I think you can make a very strong case for defence – both to be precise and the only way Inter and Arsenal can each protect their clean sheet record is by grinding out a 0-0 draw and this is precisely what I anticipate at the San Siro odds of 17/2 with BetVictor.
