Luton v West Brom Match Preview
With the way Luton contested last season’s edition of the Premier League, there was never a suggestion that manager Rob Edwards would be shown the summer exit door after suffering a return to the Championship at the first time of asking.
Especially as it was Edwards who oversaw Luton’s play-off final win over Coventry at the end of the 2022/23 Championship season and because the former Watford boss has done so much for the club in such a short space of time, a rare display of loyalty was found at Kenilworth Road.
Loyalty from the club’s board that is now being put under severe stress and whereas relegated outfits anticipate the ability to bounce straight back, it is the Hatters who currently find themselves in a rather mad scenario.
One that sees Edwards and his players sitting in the bottom rather than the top three before the visit of West Brom on Friday and with just one win their last six league outings, life in the second tier has been far harder than expected.
A statement easily backed up by their most recent reverse and with fellow unexpected strugglers Coventry also languishing around the relegation zone, their 3-2 home win on Saturday would go on to give manager Mark Robins a huge boost – especially after the Sky Blues were 2-0 down.
One that his Luton counterpart certainly needed. One that he will now have to try and find against West Brom instead and with the West Midlands outfit having failed to win any of their last six league outings, their own campaign needs a sizeable reignition.
No win in six but no loss in four either and although Carlos Corberan’s side are struggling to get maximum points, they are at least solid enough to avoid a minimum after four successive league draws.
A quartet of results that has seen West Brom lose ground on the early promotion hopefuls and with an eight-point gap now formed between current league leaders Sunderland and themselves, it is Blackburn and Watford who are now breathing down their necks in sixth and seventh respectively.
Of course, there is still a lot of league football to be played between now and May but after going unbeaten in their first six league games of the season – winning five along the way, a loss of momentum and sitting fifth in the table must be of concern to manager Corberan and fans alike.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and although West Brom have stalled recently, they still have the second best away league record to date and therefore, an away win and over 2.5 goals offers considerable value at odds of 15/4.
In addition to this, Luton are currently averaging 1.66 goals against in this season’s edition of the Championship and because of their recent propensity to concede, I think this bodes well for the 2-1 away win which is priced at 10/1.
