Manchester City v Salford Match Preview
This is another game that made me chuckle once it came out of the hat in the FA Cup third round draw.
It's Manchester City and all their billions against a Salford side owned and run by who else but members of the Class of 92.
They chose to buy the club - together with Peter Lim - as a result of concerns about football development in the area, something that City could be accused impacting as a result of years of heavy spending and effectively blocking youth pathways to local players.
So forgetting that the likes of Pep Guardiola actually live in Salford and it being a local derby, it is also a game between two opposing ideologies with Manchester City standing against everything the Class of 92, and therefore Salford, claim to support in football.
Whether or not that is true is another question, with Salford heavily criticised in the past for spending heavily for the level they play at and not giving managers as much time to succeed as the high-profile owners have claimed, but it does make this an eye-catching game that only the FA Cup could throw up.
Of course it is likely to be a one-sided game, with even a depleted City squad in terms of personnel and confidence likely to have enough to get past the Ammies and it is a shame the game is not being held at Moor Lane to increase the likelihood of an upset.
Instead most of the intrigue will be on the sidelines and in the stands to see which of Salford's famous owners show up to watch the game, with names such as David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville all among those who could well show up.
Alex Bruce is anotehr familiar name with obvious links on the bench too alongside manager Karl Robinson, who will fancy his chances of getting one over on Pep Guardiola according to Freebets' interview with Clinton Morrison this week.
I think this will be a rout however, even if it is very hard to predict what sort of XI will turn out for the Citizens.
I'm going to plump for Man City to win and win big though, with a home win and over 4.5 goals at 6/5 a surprisingly good price with BoyleSports.
In the interests of rotation though, I hope Guardiola gives James McAtee a game this weekend. He is a talent and has been kicking his heels this season, but if given a go I think he can prove his worth pulling the strings in midfield and possibly earn a move away from the club this month.
I think he could be a big player on the day, so I'm backing him to get a goal and an assist at 5/1 with William Hill.
