New Zealand v England Match Preview
England were excellent in Christchurch, both with bat and ball.
New Zealand made the early running with 348 all out before reducing England to 71-4 in reply. But, from there, they never got a sniff.
Harry Brook continued his stunning start to Test cricket with 171 off only 197 balls to underpin 499 before Brydon Carse added to his four first-innings wickets with another six to ensure the victory was all but secured.
England, chasing 104, went on to win by eight wickets.
Taking our pre-series bet of New Zealand 2-1 out of the equation for a second and talking purely from an England fan’s point of view, it would be great if they could now show the consistency which has been lacking in recent times. It’s generally been a case of one step forwards, two back - especially away from home.
They won the opening Test in India at the start of the year, for example, and lost. They did the same in Pakistan in October.
Despite the opening Test performance, I’m still confident New Zealand have something to give in this series and would be taking them to win this second Test at 11/10, which is available from Unibet amongst a host of firms.
Hip Hip Hooray, Henry
Matt Henry secured us a winner with four wickets to become New Zealand’s top first-innings bowler in the series opener, and I see no reason to divert away from the in-form fast bowler.
He has taken 38 wickets in seven appearances in this calendar year and is firmly ensconced in the top 10 leading wicket-takers in the world over that period.
I’m going to side with betway’s 1/1 on him to take a total of five wickets or more in the match, available via their Player Props section.
It’s not often Joe Root fails two Tests in a row, and he will have been frustrated with contributions of nought and 23 not out in Christchurch. Let’s get on board with betfair’s 11/8 for Root to score a first-innings fifty.
A couple of paragraphs ago, I mentioned that Henry was in the top 10 leading wicket-takers in Tests for 2024. Well, so is England’s breakthrough star Gus Atkinson.
The Surrey quick has taken 43 in nine matches since debuting in the summer.
He claimed two wickets in the first innings of the series opener and one in the second, with the bulk of the damage done by Durham’s Brydon Carse, who claimed a fabulous 10-wicket match haul.
I expect Atkinson to pose a bigger threat in this fixture and would be keen to take him at 11/4 to be England’s top first-innings bowler.
And to finish, I like William Hill’s boosted 11/2 on Harry Brook and Kane Williamson to both score a fifty in the first innings. They both achieved that feat at Christchurch. In fact, Williamson did it both innings.
