Southampton v Manchester United Match Preview
Just two teams are yet to score a point in this season’s edition of the Premier League and unfortunately for Southampton, they are one of those two sides who are already looking rather pointless.
After earning promotion via the EFL Championship playoffs, the Saints knew they were always going to be in for a baptism of fire when returning to the top tier and with that promotion, it was always going to be a test of manager Russell Martin’s playing style.
Martin is another manager who believes that possession is ten tenths of the law when it comes to the beautiful game but unfortunately, the three performances that Southampton have served up until now have been far from beautiful.
Successive 1-0 defeats to both Newcastle away and Nottingham Forest at home in the first two weeks of the season would not dent the Saints’ collective optimism too much but the following reverse to Brentford by three goals to one certainly would.
With that defeat, Southampton’s playing style is now under scrutiny and although manager Martin has his principles, those principles may need to bend slightly if the St Mary’s outfit are to start getting points on the board.
Then again, you could almost say the same about upcoming opponents Manchester United and although their manager Erik ten Hag has his own principles, you never know what playing style is going to be on show by the Red Devils.
Another humbling defeat to one of their nearest rivals is not the way to go into international break. Picking up just three points from the first nine on offer is not the way to start any new Premier League season.
Things looked rather bright under the Old Trafford lights on the opening night of the season. Since then, it has been nothing but gloom as victory over Fulham was then followed up by defeats to Brighton and Liverpool respectively.
The defeat to Liverpool was summed up by the performance of Casemiro. The former Real Madrid midfielder at fault for the Reds’ first two goals of the game and then hooked at the break, now he will have to show whether he really does have the legs to play at such a high and intense level.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips, I think the visitors will return to winning ways, but they will need time to do so. Their two goals this season have come after the break and therefore, I am backing the half time draw, then United win at the final whistle at odds of 4/1.
In addition to this, I think it will be a flat performance from the Saints in front of goal and with the Red Devils keeping a clean sheet, I also think they go up through the gears after the break with a 2-0 win. A full time outcome which is also going on the betting slip at odds of 10/1.
