Sporting v Man City Match Preview
The fact that Sporting have picked up seven points from the first nine on offer in this season’s Champions League will be largely attributed to their players on the field but at the same time, there can be no coincidence that a coach in high demand has played his own substantial part.
That man is Ruben Amorim and with the former Portuguese international overseeing their unbeaten start to European proceedings, by this time next week he will also have become the former Sporting manager.
A move to Old Trafford has been confirmed and the bright lights of Manchester United and their enormous salvage job awaits. That move takes place next Monday, but this Tuesday sees Amorim get a sneak peak at his new neighbours.
An opportunity that presents itself with Manchester City being present in the Portuguese capital and with Pep Guardiola’s men having lost their first league game in just under a year, their 32-game unbeaten streak in the top tier has come to an end.
One that was ended at the hands of Bournemouth on Saturday and as the defending champions have a rather long injury list at present, their walking wounded had to make do with the sour taste of defeat against the Cherries.
A 2-1 reverse at the Vitality Stadium, the same outcome when up against Tottenham last Wednesday and with Spurs reigning supreme in North London, it also means City are out of this season’s Carabao Cup.
A competition that was certainly at the bottom of the priority list but an exit that still hurts all the same and considering the levels that are set by City and the expectations of pundits and punters alike, you could argue that they are currently operating within a sticky patch.
One that may only be back-to-back defeats in all competitions but losing two in a row is a rather alien concept for the Etihad outfit and they will now look to return to winning ways during their upcoming trip to Portugal.
Both Sporting and City find themselves in the top eight of the newly extended table and one more win for either would guarantee a playoff outing at worst. However, neither team wants the extra football that comes with that and instead want to secure their automatic qualification hopes.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and although City have suffered a blip of late, they will have a point to prove on Tuesday and with them yet to concede in Europe this season, I am backing the away win to nil at odds of 11/4 with Paddy Power.
In addition to this, I am also going to opt for a correct score tip to back my first selection up further. No goals for the hosts, but two goals for the visitors in a rather routine win. No big European send off for Ruben Amorim but a big price for City’s 2-0 success at 10/1 with William Hill.
