Switzerland v Germany Match Preview
Ears On Scotland
After demolishing futile Scotland resistance on the opening evening of the tournament, Germany were not quite as bullish in their second Group A game on Wednesday. This time around it was only two goals instead of five but ultimately the same number of points were recorded.
A 2-0 win over Hungary, arguably gave a better indication of what Julian Nagelsmann’s men are going to be all about over the next few weeks and when you look at the way they dealt with their most recent opponents, they look likely to be there or thereabouts when it comes to the final.
Because if the clash with the Hungarians was meant to offer a steeper curve in terms of difficulty, the tournament hosts still did not have to break a sweat and with the standard of Germany’s first two performances, it is Switzerland who will have to worry about perspiration on Sunday.
Not only because they are the next in line to go up against the tournament hosts but also because they have to worry about what goes on in the clash between Scotland and Hungary that very same evening.
However, there could be a twist in the tale, and it is a scenario that allows Germany the opportunity to take their foot off the pedal before business becomes far trickier in the Round of 16 and beyond. You do not get many opportunities to rest in tournament football, this could be a rare one.
With two wins from two, Germany will be in the knockout phase and could dial down the intensity against their local rivals. However, applying the brakes after such a fast start can also have a detrimental effect and quickly halt any momentum that you have previously created.
A dilemma of sorts but ultimately, even if manager Nagelsmann was to ring the German changes, the strength, depth and power at his disposal means any of the 26-man panel would be a more than adequate starter against the Swiss.
As for the Swiss, they will consider themselves unfortunate not to get a win over Scotland on Wednesday but at the same time, will also feel grateful that they withstood the late barrage from the Tartan Army.
As a consequence, Murat Yakin’s men find themselves second in the group before the final round of fixtures and as long as they match what Scotland do against Hungary, they will advance to the Round of 16 as Group A runners-up.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips, and I just cannot see the might of the German machine slowing down and therefore, I am going to back a third successive group stage win and a return to scoring form for Kai Havertz. Put these two together in a bet builder at 3/1
In addition to this, I think there are going to be goals in this game. Just none for Switzerland and whereas the Germany win to nil only pays out 2/1, a comfortable 3-0 win pays out a far more comfortable 14/1.
