Tottenham v Man City Match Preview
Only a few weeks ago a potentially fateful comment was made by Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou. “I always win something in the second season” and with those words, the Australian had inadvertently built a rod for his own back.
Because if he is to deliver something in his second season as Spurs boss and finally end the club’s lengthy trophy drought, the available options are not as plentiful as the teams that have the ability to genuinely challenge for the Premier League title.
Instead, Tottenham’s potential prizes are narrowed down to either domestic or European silverware and with them playing host to Manchester City on Wednesday, this fixture either helps Postecoglou reinforce his statement or strengthens that same rod in his back.
A pairing with City in any cup competition is never ideal and especially as Pep Guardiola’s men won in North London when the two teams met in the FA Cup at the start of the year. A goal from Nathan Ake proving the difference as another trophy hope for Spurs quickly disintegrated.
However, this season could provide a twist in the tale and whereas City used to use the League Cup as a springboard to go on and win even bigger prizes later that same season, this competition is now firmly at the bottom of the agenda.
The reason for this is due to the additional football that comes with the expanded Champions League format and with something having to give in terms of scheduling and player welfare, it is this fixture that may end up paying a price for City to succeed elsewhere.
Then again, there is a weakened City team in principle but even a weakened team with 11 changes is still largely capable of beating many of its Premier League counterparts and the strength of Pep Guardiola’s men on Wednesday is the wildcard in all of this.
Should Guardiola make almost like for like changes, then the balance of power in N17 will still be largely near equilibrium. Should Guardiola go even deeper into the personnel where players have American Football style squad numbers in the 80’s, the balance creaks towards the hosts.
Especially as Tottenham need to bounce back after a miserable showing on Sunday at Crystal Palace and for all their faults on the road this season, Postecoglou’s players are a more dangerous beat when in front of their own support.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with the caveat of a fringe City panel being on show, I think the hosts will show up when it matters. With that in mind, I am backing a Tottenham win and both teams to score at odds of 3/1 with bet365.
In addition to this, there has been all kinds of clamour surrounding the talents of Mikey Moore in recent weeks and with this being an excellent opportunity to get more minutes under his belt, I am backing him to excel with the game’s opening goal at odds of 11/1 again with bet365.
