Tottenham v Manchester United Match Preview
Tottenham will hope to take a step closer to a domestic piece of silverware when they host Manchester United in their EFL Cup quarter-final tie on Thursday evening.
Although Tottenham were rampant against Southampton last Sunday, routing the Premier League strugglers 5-0 on the South Coast, United will be buoyed after they ended a tough spell by seeing off Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad in the Manchester Derby.
Both teams have been mired by inconsistency this season, and Ange Postecoglou still has work to do to convince the doubters. A trophy would go some way to rectifying that.
Ruben Amorim, meanwhile, made a brave call last weekend by excluding United duo Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from the matchday squad against City, but it was a decision that ultimately paid off.
On the team news front, Tottenham will be monitoring Destiny Udogie, who was hooked off after half an hour against the Saints with tightness in his leg, but perhaps that was a precautionary measure.
United’s treatment table is considerably lighter, although Mason Mount looks poised to miss out, while Luke Shaw’s return date remains unclear.
This game precedes the League Cup semi-final draw and both teams will be desperate to put their names in the hat for it. I have rummaged through the betting markets and incorporated a couple of picks to support my Tottenham v Manchester United predictions.
Tottenham to pinch it
Tottenham were devastating against Southampton last weekend, slicing through them like butter, albeit they were facing limited opposition.
I do have a tinge of regret about going for the BTTS line for that game, given Southampton’s inability to engineer any chances of note and their current predicament.
Of course, Postecoglou is still under the microscope, and his stubbornness in terms of eschewing pragmatism at certain moments in games is alarming.
Amorim, on the other hand, saw United turn in a drab performance for 80-odd minutes against City, well except for Amad Diallo, who played like a young kid in a park and shone.
Diallo’s last-gasp goal was just the seventh 90th-minute winner the Red Devils have scored against the reigning Premier League champions.
Back to the here and now, goalless draws are scarce between Tottenham and United, and I think this will be decided in 90 minutes. For the first of my picks, I’m going with Tottenham to prevail & BTTS which is trading at an inviting 12/5 with Betano.
James Maddison to get Tottenham off to a flyer
Although the last two league games were markedly different results-wide, one underlying trend was the quick starts that Tottenham got off to.
In particular against the Saints, Tottenham were four goals to the good inside just 25 minutes.
James Maddison is often irrepressible and he is a difference-maker in the attacking third.
The midfielder grabbed a double against Southampton to take his tally to seven for the campaign in the league, and his second was perfectly executed from a tight angle.
Maddison could well get off the mark in the League Cup if he starts. To round off my Tottenham Manchester United predictions, I’m leaning into the arguably long price of 21/2 dished up at BetVictor for Maddison to break the deadlock.
