Three Underdogs to Follow at the 2023 World Snooker Championships
With the 2023 Snooker World Championships starting this Saturday we are taking a peek further down the field to see who could provide an upset at this year’s tournament.
We’ve ignored the betting’s “Big Six” here to fight the corner of some of the underdogs heading to the Crucible Theatre.
Take a look at our three picks to spring a surprise at the 2023 Snooker World Championship:
Mark Allen to win the 2023 Snooker World Championship at 14/1 with bet365
Claiming Mark Allen as an outsider or an underdog might be a stretch, but the Northern Irishman isn’t considered inside the top six favourites despite a dominant season on the tour.
Allen has won three rankings tournaments this season and is up to number three in the world, but has only got past the second round in Sheffield once in 11 attempts.
Still, Allen’s aggressive style should suit well in a favourable quarter. He’s on a collision course with Neil Robertson in the quarters but the Australian has been struggling for form of late.
Anthony McGill to win the 2023 Snooker World Championship at 55/1 with Betvictor
Judd Trump won’t be sleeping in the run up to the opening round inside the Crucible.
The 2019 World Champion has drawn the in-form player coming out of qualifying in Anthony McGill and a first round upset looks extremely tempting.
Their head-to-head record doesn’t suit this narrative – Trump leads 9-1 – but McGill has had a positive season on the baize reaching the semi-finals of the Northern Ireland Open and the quarters at the World Grand Prix.
McGill only has wins at the Snooker Shoot-out and the Indian Open throughout his career, meaning 55/1 is a suitably large price for him at the World Championships.
Ali Carter to win the 2023 Snooker World Championship at 40/1 with Unibet
“The Captain” has had one of his best seasons on tour for a while.
A German Masters win plus a final appearance at the Players Championship are his headline performances, and don’t forget he is a two-time finalist at the Crucible Theatre.
And most importantly, Carter has got his hunger back.
After claiming that he was ready to quit snooker last year, Carter is back up to number 12 in the world and finds himself in the more favourable bottom half of the draw.
Who’s to say it won’t be third time lucky for Carter in the 2023 event?
