Premier League Relegation Odds: Leicester 4/9 favourites

The 2023/24 Premier League campaign drew to a close on Sunday, May 19 and saw all three of the recently promoted teams relegated back to the Championship.

Sheffield United and Burnley’s relegation was confirmed ahead of the final day, while Luton Town were officially relegated on Sunday.

Looking ahead to 2024/25, it is not surprising to see the two newly-promoted teams among the favourites to go down, while sides facing potential points deductions like Everton are also in the running.

2024/25 Premier League Relegation: The Contenders

Leicester City

Leicester City dominated the Championship in 2023/24 but as shown by Burnley this term, success in England’s second tier does not always translate to the Premier League.

The Foxes are 4/9 favourites to be relegated currently, which may have something to do with the potential FFP charges hanging over their heads. The Midlands outfit were charged by the Premier League last month for allegedly breaking profit and sustainability rules. The EFL did not punish Leicester when the charges emerged, but they have still been charged by the Premier League, leaving them in a precarious position heading into 2024/25.

Everton

Like Leicester, Everton go into 2024/25 with the threat of further points deductions hanging over their head. The Toffees finished on 40 points last season in 15th place, despite having four points deducted earlier this year. As a result, with no issues off the field, Sean Dyche and co. would probably back themselves to survive once again in the forthcoming campaign.

However, the Merseyside club could yet face a further points deduction in relation to interest costs associated with the building of the club’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town do not have any FFP problems going into next season (at least none that have come to light yet). But the Tractor Boys are still among the favourites to go down.

Ipswich shocked the English footballing world by finishing 2nd in the Championship just one year after earning promotion from League One. While this is an impressive accomplishment, it does mean Kieran McKenna’s squad is nowhere close to the level of an Everton or Leicester, who have a number of Premier League-proven stars already on their books.

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest faced a four-point deduction in 2023/24 but were still able to secure survival on the final day. Forest finished 17th in the league on 32 points, six clear of 18th.

Even without that points deduction, though, the Midlands outfit were lucky to survive. 36 points is often not enough to maintain top-flight status and Forest’s inability to spend big this summer may leave them vulnerable to another relegation scrap.

Manchester City

While Manchester City are obviously not going to be relegated in a normal season, the 115 FFP charges against them means it cannot be ruled out in the coming campaign.

It has now been 15 months since City were hit with 115 Premier League charges for alleged financial irregularity – charges they strongly deny. There have been reports a hearing date is in place for the autumn of 2024, with the same reports suggesting a decision by the summer of 2025 but nothing is confirmed yet.

The disciplinary commission hearing the City case has limitless powers. This means City could be kicked out of the Premier League or have a massive fine imposed – or both. Alternatively, they might suffer a huge points deduction imposed at a specific time, including at the start of a new season.
