AFCON Betting Tips - Monday 29 January
Africa Cup of Nations Acca of the Day
Cape Verde vs Mauritania betting tips
The group stages were full of surprises, and two teams who upset the odds will meet at Stade Félix-Houphouët-Boigny.
Cape Verde were straight-up impressive in the group stages, ending up with seven points, beating both Ghana and Mozambique before, despite having nothing to play for, holding Egypt to a draw last Monday.
Garry Rodrigues’ 92nd minute winner against Ghana on opening night the highlight of their campaign so far, although Bebé's long-range free-kick five days later wasn’t bad either.
This is the first time the Blue Sharks have won multiple matches at a single AFCON, although it is their third appearance in the knockout phase, dumped out by Ghana in 2013 and Senegal two years ago.
So, victory here would be Cape Verde’s first-ever knockout phase win, so can Bubista’s team create history?
Mauritania meantime made their Africa Cup of Nations debut as recently as 2019, now qualifying for three successive editions, although it took nine attempts for them to claim an illusive first win.
It appeared as though it wouldn’t come, as the Lions of Chinguetti were very narrowly beaten by by Burkina Faso and then Angola.
However, on Tuesday night, Mohamed Dellahi Yali was the only scorer as they caused a huge upset, beating Algeria 1-0 in Bouaké, with this not only securing Mauritania’s maiden AFCON victory, but it also saw them sneak through as a best-ranked third-place finisher.
Head coach Amir Abdou led the Comoros Islands to the 2022 round of 16, and this could be the end of the road for his new employers, with Cape Verde favourites to advance in Abidjan.
Senegal vs Ivory Coast betting tips
Monday night’s clash is a true blockbuster, as the hosts meet the holders at Stade Charles Konan Banny.
Côte d’Ivoire, hosting for the first time in 40 years, came into this tournament with sky-high expecations, although they so very nearly suffered an ignominious group phase exit.
Les Éléphants’ bid for glory began in style, swatting aside Guinea-Bissau 2-0, although the cracks in the foundation began to appear as they were beaten by rivals Nigeria five days later.
Then, last Monday, needing just a draw guarantee progression, there’s not other way to put this, Ivory Coast had their ‘Brazil 2014′ moment.
They completely unravelled against Equatorial Guinea, conceding on the cusp of half time before, whilst chasing a late equaliser, shipping three more during a 13 minute spree at Stade Alassane Ouattara.
4-0 it finished, this les Éléphants’ joint-biggest competitive defeat of all-time, with the scoreline leaving their qualification hopes hanging by a thread, so much so that manager Jean-Louis Gasset was sacked.
Well, 48 hours later, Morocco’s victory over Zambia meant Ivory Coast had, just, done enough to sneak through as the fourth best-ranked third-place finisher.
After all that, the host nation do get the chance to fight another day, but will be led by caretaker boss Emerse Faé, and will certainly need to improve to have any chance in this one.
Defending champions Senegal, in stark contrast, were the only team to win every match in the group phase, scoring eight goals and conceding just once.
Aliou Cissé's side were most impressive against Cameroon in the second fixture, prevailing 3-1, with Ismaïla Sarr, Habib Diallo and Sadio Mané all scoring as they swatted the five-times champions aside.
The Lions of Téranga won this competition for the first time ever two years ago, but look more than capable of retaining the trophy, something no side has achieved since 2010.
Côte d’Ivoire have won both previous AFCON meetings with Senegal 1-0, these coming in 1965 and 1986 but here, despite being faced with a partisan crowd, the Lions of Téranga are clear favourites in Yamoussoukro.
