A Wasted Opportunity

Inter have certainly done the difficult work in Portugal, now they must make sure that the task of progressing to this season’s Champions League semi-finals is complete.

Job Almost Done

Benfica have certainly been one of the surprise acts of this season’s Champions League competition. Not only had they qualified out of a group that included both PSG and Juventus, but they also managed to finish at the top of the standings.

An outcome that sent Juventus packing to the Europa League and the Lisbon-based outfit to the Round of 16. While it was here where they would make incredibly light work of Club Brugge and also indirectly put their manager Scott Parker out of work once again.

Unfortunately for Roger Schmidt’s Benfica side, it was Inter who made rather light work of them in the first-leg of their quarterfinal clash. The black and blue half of Milan already disposed of Porto in the previous round, and they are looking for another Portuguese scalp.

One that they are already halfway to claiming and with Benfica being so previously impressive in the current edition of the Champions League, it is fair to say that a 2-0 Inter win at the Estádio da Luz was something of a surprise.

Especially as Inter failed to get the better of Porto at the Estádio do Dragão during their Round of 16 second-leg tie. This was also a night where Simone Inzaghi’s men would end the game with numerical superiority in terms of players, but they could not gain the same in terms of goals.

But the San Siro outfit certainly have the superiority when it comes to the balance of this tie. A 2-0 lead in their back pocket is not to be sniffed at and considering they have won their last three home European outings, Inter now find themselves in the box seat in terms of further progress.

Not only at the end of Wednesday evening but also potentially to the final itself. The last eight and subsequent final four draw has pitted the giants on one half of the bracket and the relative minnows on the other.

Inter have not reached a Champions League final since 2010 – the year that they beat Bayern Munich at the Stadio Olimpico and they may not get a better chance to return to European football’s biggest stage.

While they may also be hoping that their crosstown rivals can do a big favour beforehand. If Milan can dispose of Napoli, the route to the final becomes less treacherous and another step towards it can be taken by finally deposing of Benfica.

This now leads me to the first of my two tips. My first offering is focusing on a rather professional showing from the hosts. There is no need for them to do anything crazy and therefore, a home win and under 2.5 total goals at odds of 15/4 is a good starting point for me.

Our Top Value Bet Suggestion For This Clash

While my second tip looks at the player who is expected to break the deadlock. I have opted for Nicolo Barella and with the midfielder already scoring two Champions League goals this season, I am backing him to put Inter ahead at odds of 8/1.
