Luton to beat Blackpool

Luton took another step towards securing their spot in the Play-Offs, with Good Friday’s goalless draw at Millwall.

The result leaves Rob Edwards’ side with just one defeat in their last 14 league games - that loss coming to champions-elect Burnley, who are almost in a class all to themselves – conceding only six goals!

After such an impeccable run of form, the Hatters need a mathematical maximum of 11 points from their remaining six games to book their top six spot.

With Gabriel Osho, Cody Drameh and Marvellous Nakamba playing so well, it’s hard to see Town dropping points against Blackpool, who are now seven points adrift after three straight defeats.

The Tangerines hoped the steady hands of Mick McCarthy would keep them up, and a 6-1 thumping of QPR offered hope, but they’ve not since added to their tally, with the Yorkshireman departing following the 3-1 home defeat to relegation rivals Cardiff.

Development coach Stephen Dobbie takes charge, while the club begin preparations for a longer-term appointment: somebody who can initiate the rebuilding process in League One.

Norwich to beat Rotherham

Norwich breathed some life into their top six bid on Friday, thanks to a 2-0 victory at Play-Off rivals Blackburn, which cut the gap from four points to one.

With neither Rovers nor fifth-placed Millwall in-form, the Canaries have been able to elevate themselves into the mix, despite having won just one of their last five league games.

The Yellows will hope the individual quality of Gabriel Sara, arguably their stand-out player this season, can haul them to victory over a battling Rotherham side, fresh from a crucial victory on Friday.

The Millers beat West Brom 3-1 through a Jordan Hugill brace, and the industrious striker is out to cause havoc for another former club.

Barnsley to beat Shrewsbury

Two defeats in three for Barnsley mean League One’s four-horse automatic promotion race has probably been whittled down to three.

Michael Duff’s side still have momentum behind them, though, in spite of losses at Exeter and Burton, with the refereeing going against them in the latter encounter: the Reds seem to be cursed to not get a penalty all season.

The good news for Duff is that he now has more depth at his disposal than earlier in the campaign, having had the luxury of bringing on technician Josh Benson and dynamo Luke Thomas in the second half last time out.

Extra options in reserve will certainly help Tarn in the Play-Offs, which looks likely to be their fate: Ipswich and Plymouth Argyle won’t drop enough points for them to get autos, while Derby and Peterborough – in sixth and seventh respectively – aren’t bridging an eight point gap, realistically.

Barnsley can move another step closer towards an excellent first season under Duff with victory over Shrewsbury, who had feint Play-Off aspirations themselves before a run of four defeats in five.

Steve Cotterill’s side have been well-drilled for much of the season, but they’ve shipped nine goals in the last two.

Sheffield Wednesday to beat Accrington Stanley

A six-game winless streak is likely to be costly in an automatic promotion race most seasons, but especially this year, at this stage, with Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich in sumptuous form.

As such, Sheffield Wednesday have gone from being five points clear with two games in hand a month ago, to having their fate taken out of their hands.

The Owls played good teams in Bolton and Barnsley at the start of that sequence, but a shock 1-0 loss at bottom side Forest Green preceded three consecutive draws with bottom half sides Cheltenham, Lincoln and Oxford.

There’s no two ways about it: this is a high-pressure game for Wednesday.

The good news is they still have a reasonably favourable run-in, with a combination of strugglers and safe, midtable sides to play between now and the final day trip to Derby, whereas Ipswich still have to go to Peterborough and Barnsley.

Plus, Darren Moore’s side can still lean on the brilliance of playmaker Barry Bannan, and they can still comfortably name an XI of Championship players.

In spite of poor form, that still counts for a lot against Accrington Stanley, who have but a fraction of that resource and negligible higher-league experience.

Left wing-back has been a problem all season, to the point that 34-year-old Sean McConville continues to start there, despite the club icon clearly not having the legs for the role at this stage of his career.

If Wednesday can manipulate situations in which Dennis Adeniran or Mallik Wilks are running at McConville, they could have a field day in getting crosses into a Lee Gregory, a Callum Paterson, or a Michael Smith, if the latter – rated at a 50:50 chance – is passed fit.

Leyton Orient to beat Harrogate

Leyton Orient extended their unbeaten run to 11 games on Good Friday, thanks to a 2-0 victory at Salford.

Manager Richie Wellens certainly enjoyed the victory at his former employers, giving the travelling faithful two arm-roll and fistpumps, before deciding the third would be overkill midway through.

Wellens has done an astonishing job in E10, with his side 10 points clear with one game in hand, as the O’s need a mathematical maximum of six more points from their remaining seven games.

They have goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux to thank, in no small way, for being in this position: the cultured stopper has kept an impressive 22 clean sheets, and made some four penalty saves.

Elsewhere, ball-carrier Idris El Mizouni has shone in midfield, while versatile full-back Rob Hunt has really stepped up to the mantle in recent games.

All things considered, Orient should take another step closer to League One on Monday, but visitors Harrogate have work to do themselves.

The form of Hartlepool and Crawley means Town are only two points above the relegation zone, despite having lost just two of their previous 11 league games.
