After Andrew Redmayne’s shootout antics made headlines around the globe, it also meant that Australia have booked a seat on a 2022 World Cup flight and although they will largely be considered as outsiders, the Socceroos will not want to simply make up the numbers.

With a nail-biting victory over Costa Rica now in the history books, it means the men from Down Under will be making a sixth appearance in the World Cup finals and will look to emulate their efforts of 2006.

One of many shocks from the group stage saw the Aussies progress to the round of 16, finishing second behind France on goal difference.

However, it all came to an end in the last 16 round, when they were beaten 2-1 by Argentina, sending them home from the tournament.

Australia 2022 World Cup Squad

Here is the confirmed Australia squad that will be taking part in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

  • Goalkeepers: Mathew Ryan (FC Copenhagen), Andrew Redmayne (Sydney FC), Danny Vukovic (Central Coast Mariners).
  • Defenders: Aziz Behich (Dundee United), Milos Degenek (Columbus Crew), Thomas Deng (Aibirex Niigata), Joel King (Odense Boldklub), Nathaniel Atkinson (Hearts), Fran Karacic (Brescia), Harry Souttar (Stoke City), Kye Rowles (Hearts), Craig Goodwin (Adelaide United).
  • Midfielders: Aaron Mooy (Celtic), Jackson Irvine (St Pauli), Ajdin Hrustic (Hellas Verona), Bailey Wright (Sunderland), Cameron Devlin (Hearts), Riley McGree (Middlesbrough), Keanu Baccus (St Mirren).
  • Forwards: Awer Mabil (Cadiz), Mathew Leckie (Melbourne City), Martin Boyle (Hibernian), James Maclaren (Melbourne City), Jason Cummings (Central Coast Mariners), Mitchell Duke (Fagiano Okayama), Garang Kuol (Central Coast Mariners).

Although Australia cannot call upon the likes of Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka these days, that does not mean that the pipeline of talent has completely dried up and where the aforementioned pair were previously blazing a trail, it is time for the next generation to take to the international stage.

A stage that will welcome the likes of experienced goalkeeper Mat Ryan and after representing both Brighton and Arsenal in the Premier League, the now Real Sociedad shot stopper will be a familiar face to many World Cup viewers.

While someone who may be less familiar, is that of Mathew Leckie and with the forward ending a lengthy German tour in terms of his footballing career, the forward is now plying his trade for Melbourne City in the A-League.

A club that is also home to Australian’s latest attacking star and with James McLaren in a decent run of international goalscoring form, he will look for a supply line that comes from the likes of Aaron Mooy and Tom Rogic.
