Champions League Golden Boot Odds: Kylian Mbappe vs Kane

The race for the 2023/24 Champions League Golden Boot took another turn on Tuesday evening.

Manchester City’s Erling Haaland is the current holder of the prize, netting 12 en route to the Sky Blues winning the competition last season. But after City were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by Real Madrid, we will have a new Golden Boot winner come June.

Bayern Munich faced off with Real Madrid in the first of two semi-final legs on April 30, drawing the tie 2-2 with Harry Kane netting his 8th European goal of the campaign to boost his chances of being named the 2023/24 Golden Boot winner.

As mentioned above, Erling Haaland won the Golden Boot last season, also clinching the prize in 2020/21. Karim Benzema won the award in 2021/22, while Robert Lewandowski did so in 2019/20.

Prior to that run of mixed winners, the Golden Boot was dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo from 2007/08 to 2018/19 (barring one Neymar win in 2014/15 when he shared the prize with the aforementioned duo). As a result, we are guaranteed to have a brand new winner this time around with Kylian Mbappe currently leading the betting:

  • Kylian Mbappe - 8/15
  • Harry Kane - 1/1
  • Jude Bellingham - 66/1
  • Vinicius Junior - 66/1
  • Rodrygo - 66/1

Who will win the Champions League Golden Boot?

Kylian Mbappe (8 goals)

The odds-on favourite to win the Champions League Golden Boot this season is PSG’s Kylian Mbappe.

The Frenchman is the current joint-top goalscorer in the competition with eight. Mbappe netted three times in six group-stage games but has really come alive in the knockout phase. The World Cup winner scored three goals across two last-16 quarter-final legs versus Real Sociedad before netting twice in a second-leg quarter-final versus FC Barcelona as PSG completed an epic comeback to book their place in the semi-final.

Mbappe is guaranteed to play two more Champions League games this season as PSG play Borussia Dortmund over two sem-final legs, the first of which takes place on Wednesday evening. And as the French powerhouse are favourites for to qualify over BVB, Mbappe is likely to have three more total games to secure his place as the Golden Boot winner.

Harry Kane (8 goals)

The second-favourite for the Golden Boot this season is Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane. Kane is level with Mbappe on eight goals in the competition after netting versus Real Madrid on Tuesday.

However, the Englishman’s odds are slightly longer for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Kane has already played one more game than Mbappe as PSG’s first semi-final does not take place until Wednesday evening.

Secondly, Real Madrid are favourites to make it to the final over Bayern, meaning Kane probably only has one more Champions League game left this season. Given his superb goalscoring form this term, it is still very possible for the England captain to net a few goals in the second leg versus Madrid next week. But it is easy to see why Mbappe is the favourite right now.
