Michael Conlan to beat Luis Alberto Lopez by Decision/Technical Decision (Saturday 21:00)
Michael Conlan has another chance to win a world title this weekend following his brutal loss to Leigh Wood last March.
The 31-year-old is maturing in the sport, but may struggle to land another big opportunity if he lets Lopez slip through his fingers.
Lopez is well known in the UK following big wins over Issac Lowe and Josh Warrington, but is fairly one-dimensional in his attacks. He can bang, but assuming Conlan’s legs can hold up for 36 minutes, we see the home fighter taking this one on the scorecards.
Lawrence Okolie to beat Chris Billam-Smith by Decision/Technical Decision (Saturday 22:00)
Lawrence Okolie is fighting a swathe of negative opinion in the way that he fights.
The cruiserweight world champion will be looking to remove his “boring” tag by putting on a clinic against home fighter Chris Billam-Smith.
Billam-Smith is an improving fighter and deserves his jump up to fight for a world title.
But Okolie is tricky, awkward and has the capability to turn this one ugly and a bit scrappy.
Okolie does hit hard but doesn’t find the target often enough – a tight win on the cards looks the most likely in another uninspiring title defence.
Mauricio Lara to beat Leigh Wood by KO/TKO/Disqualification (Saturday 22:15)
Leigh Wood is a brave man for enacting his rematch clause against Mauricio Lara.
The Nottingham fighter got iced out cold by the Mexican back in February after looking pretty comfortable in the opening stanzas.
Wood is the better boxer, but we are not sure that he’ll be able to keep his chin out of danger for the 12 championship rounds.
Lara has stopped his opponent in 12 of his last 13 wins and is pound-for-pound one of the biggest one-hitter-quitters in the sport.
