Croatia v Canada Match Preview

When Canada were awarded a penalty against Belgium, the nation held its breath. Seconds later it would let out a huge sigh and with Alphonso Davies seeing his effort saved, their chance of landing a knockout blow had been wasted.

In hindsight, Jonathan David would have been the better choice to defeat Thibaut Courtois and if the game was played again on 99 different occasions, the Lille forward would have surely put his country one-nil up.

Of course, it would be unfair to label full blame on the shoulders of Davies and if Canada just had more nous in attack, they would have surely made better use of the litany of chances that they created.

Whether this comes down to naivety and a lack of major tournament experience is something that can be argued and if you were to argue it with conviction, you would likely find yourself as being correct.

However, hindsight is a wonderful thing at the best of times and such thinking will be of little benefit to manager John Herdman. Especially as he now has to mastermind success against a team that made the 2018 final.

Then again, that same Croatia side looked like it was stuck in 2018 just a few days ago and after toiling to a draw with Morocco, it was far from an ideal start for manager Zlatko Dalić and his players.

Even with the likes of Luka Modric and Ivan Perisic in the starting eleven, their nous and experience at the highest level could do little to break down a stubborn Morocco side and were it not for resolute defending at the other end, the Atlas Lions may have snatched a win.

It was a share of the points that gets the Croats off the mark, and they will take solace that it is one more than their upcoming Canadian opponents.

Get their next performance right and a substantial step to the Round of 16 will have been taken.

Although Croatia’s two biggest names did little to no damage against Morocco, you do write them off at your peril and if Canada take their eye off the ball for just a second, punishment will not be all that far away.
