The Magpies are currently 17 Premier League matches unbeaten and as impressive as this is, it may be the one thing that is holding them back.

There is no doubt that Newcastle are a well drilled side under Eddie Howe and you only have to look at their league position as testament of that. Fourth in the Premier League at the time of writing and two points clear of Tottenham who find themselves a position below.
Not only that, but the Magpies also have a game in hand over Spurs and with the North London outfit playing a day later than their Champions League qualification rivals, Newcastle have the opportunity to turn the screw even further.
However, a look at Eddie Howe’s men over the past few weeks would have highlighted one thing and this is the fact that although they are notoriously difficult to beat, they are also finding wins notoriously difficult at the same time.
Of the last six league outings that the St James’ Park outfit have been involved in, five of those have been draws, In the same half dozen, the Toon have failed to score more than a single goal in each.
Another thing to be aware of in that sample of six, is the three 0-0 draws that they have recorded. The defence should certainly be commended for their efforts, the attack certainly needs to go under the spotlight.
Five draws from the last six, 10 points dropped and if we use artistic license and assume Newcastle would have won that quintet instead, they would be joint on points with both Manchester City and Arsenal at the top.
Now though, Newcastle will have to deal with the visit of Liverpool on Saturday and with the Reds being the only team to claim their scalp this season and in controversial circumstances it must be said, revenge will certainly be on the hosts’ agenda.
While maximum points will certainly be high on Liverpool’s own agenda and after earning a confidence boosting win in Monday’s Merseyside derby, the Anfield outfit now need a head of steam to aid their own European qualification hopes.
Both sides have huge fixtures waiting around the corner but at the same time, they can ill afford to take their foot off the pedal beforehand and any talk of the EFL Cup final or Champions League visit of Real Madrid will not be welcomed within the respective camps.
