After a couple of months in summer hibernation, I’m back to spin the longshot wheel to see if we can land a second successive season of profit.
We’re focusing on the opening day of EFL action and our campaign curtain-raiser comes in at a whopping 125/1 with bet365.
- Luton to beat Birmingham City
- Reading to beat Blackpool
- Rotherham v Swansea – Both teams to score
- Millwall v Stoke – Under 2.5 goals
- Derby to beat Oxford to nil
- Stockport to beat Barrow
Luton to beat Birmingham City
The Hatters will be looking to build on a superb season last time out that saw them reach the Championship play-offs and their home record saw them lose only four times.
One of those defeats came against Birmingham, but amid off-the-field uncertainty and little in the way of inspirational signings on the pitch, I reckon they’re in for a tough year.
Reading to beat Blackpool
Reading had a poor season in 21/22 but have made some decent summer additions, with midfielder Jeff Hendrick and striker Shane Long making the drop down from the Premier League.
Hosts Blackpool haven’t spent a penny over the summer and ended last season with back-to-back defeats against relegated sides. Could that be the start of the slide?
Rotherham v Swansea – Both teams to score
The Millers continue to yo-yo between the second and third tiers, but they tend to struggle at Championship level and in their own backyard they’ve kept just one clean sheet in their last 14 in the competition.
But Swansea aren’t the most reliable side defensively either, conceding in all of their final seven Championship games last season.
Millwall v Stoke – Under 2.5 goals
This fixture doesn’t really scream goals, with Millwall averaging less than 1.5 goals per game at home last season, while Stoke barely mustered an average of more than 1 goal per match on the road.
And recent meetings between the two haven’t delivered much in the way of goals, with seven of the last nine clashes seeing under 2.5 goals.
Derby to beat Oxford to nil
They may have been relegated last season, but just 28 goal concessions at home is enough to suggest Derby’s defence will keep plenty out at third-tier level this season.
And visitors Oxford failed to score in their final three games in preseason, so they’re hardly firing on all cylinders ahead of a tough trip to Pride Park.
Stockport to beat Barrow
Stockport are fancied by many to make it back-to-back promotions after coming up from the Conference last season.
And they should get off to a flyer against a Barrow side that travelled poorly last year, winning just five times and scoring a paltry 19 goals in 23 away outings in 21/22.
