Serbia are set to take part in their first-ever European Championship tournament this summer. Serbia was previously part of Yugoslavia and reached two finals in the 1960s.

But after the completed dissolution of Yugoslavia in 2006, the Serbia national team did not qualify for the next four European Championships it played qualifiers for, before finally securing a spot at this summer’s Euros.

Serbia Euro 2024 Top Tip

Heading into their first-ever European Championship tournament, Serbia are not expected to get too far in the competition.

However, thanks to the introduction of the third-place rule, Serbia do have a good chance of making it out of their group this summer.

While England are expected to top Group C, a tight battle is expected between Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia for 2nd and 3rd place. And in the betting at least, Serbia are better placed to reach the knockout phase of the competition than Slovenia.

Serbia’s Road to Qualification

Serbia were drawn in Group G for the Euro 2024 qualifying stage alongside Hungary, Montenegro, Lithuania and Bulgaria.

Hungary finished top of the group and were the only side to go undefeated. Serbia, meanwhile, were able to clinch 2nd place, finishing three points above 3rd-place Montenegro.

Serbia won four, drew two (both vs Bulgaria) and lost two (both vs Hungary) of their eight qualifying games.

When are Serbia’s Euro 2024 games?

Serbia will play three Euro 2024 group games. The opponents and dates can be found below:

  • Group C - Serbia vs England, June 16.
  • Group C - Slovenia vs Serbia, June 20.
  • Group C - Denmark vs Serbia, June 25.

Serbia’s Road to the Final

Anyone who is looking at backing Serbia for success will want to know how they can get to the final. Their paths are determined by where they finish in the group, either first, second or third - and here are the various permutations that they will have to navigate.

Round of 16

  • If Serbia win Group C - Their last 16 game will be against one of the 3rd-place teams from Group D, E or F. This game will be played on June 30.
  • If Serbia are runners up in Group C - Their last 16 game will come against the winners of Group A - a group containing Germany, Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland. This game will be played on June 29.
  • If Serbia finish third in Group C (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Their last 16 game will be against either the winner of Group F - Turkey Portugal, Czech Republic, TBD - or the winner of Group E - Belgium, Slovakia, Romania, TBD. These games will be played on July 1 or July 2.

Quarter-Finals

  • If Serbia win Group C - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the runner-up of Group A vs the runner-up of Group B. On paper, their most likely opponent will be Italy. This game will be played on July 6.
  • If Serbia are runners up in Group C - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group B winner vs one of the 3rd-place teams from Group A/D/E/F. Their most likely opponent would be Spain (coming in as Group B winners). This game will be played on July 5.
  • If Serbia finish third in Group C (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - They will either face the winner of the last-16 clash between Group D and E’s runners-up or the winner of the game between Group D’s winner and Group F’s runner-up. These games will be played on July 5 or July 6.

Semi-Finals

  • If Serbia win Group C - Many assumptions have to be made by the time we get to this stage, but if things go as expected, Serbia will face either Belgium or Portugal in the semi-final. This game will be played on July 10.
  • If Serbia are runners up in Group C - Again, a lot of assumptions need to be made here but Serbia’s most likely opponents are France or the Czech Republic. This game will be played on July 9.
  • If Serbia finish third in Group C (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Given how the third-place teams are put into the knockout phase, Serbia could face any of Germany, Spain, Netherlands or Belgium. These games will be played on July 9 or July 10.

Final

  • If Serbia win Group C - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of Germany, Spain, Netherlands or Portugal - of said clubs, Spain seem the most likely to make it to the final. The final will be played on July 14.
  • If Serbia are runners up in Group C - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of Belgium, France, England or Italy.
  • If Serbia finish third in Group C (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Serbia could be put onto either side of the draw depending on how they rank among the third-place teams, meaning they could face any of the big hitters we have mentioned above.

Euro 2024

Serbia’s Key Players

Aleksandar Mitrovic - By far and away, Serbia’s biggest threat at Euro 2024 will be Aleksandar Mitrovic. The former Fulham striker has scored 57 goals in 87 appearances for Serbia at the time of writing, making him his country’s all-time top goalscorer by more than double the margin of second place. Mitrovic is also, of course, a proven Premier League striker, which will be crucial against both England and Denmark in the group phase.

Dusan Tadic - Dusan Tadic is now past his prime at 35 years of age but he is Serbia’s captain and his vast experience will be essential for his country this summer as they take part in the competition for the first time. Tadic is a major threat with his set-pieces and he will be relied upon to feed the other two players on this list. Tadic has 40 assists in 104 games for Serbia - the most in history.

Dusan Vlahovic - Dusan Vlahovic missed a decent chunk of Serbia’s Euro 2024 qualifying due to injury. However, when fit, he is part of a deadly attacking trio that includes the two players above. Vlahovic has 13 goals in 25 games for his country and heads into this summer’s Euros in fine club form having found the back of the net regularly for Juventus this term.
