Norwich to beat West Brom – 23/20

Norwich have shot up the Championship at this early stage with a six-game winning streak, which puts them four points clear of third.

Oddly, there is a feeling that the Canaries haven’t even hit fifth gear yet, in terms of performances.

One school of thought would be that this perceived reliance on individualism will catch up with the Yellows as the season unfolds.

Andrew Omobamidele, Marcelino Nunez, Teemu Pukki and Josh Sargent can’t pull blinders every game, and sometimes they’ll need to be able to fall back on more coherent patterns of play.

Another school, though, would be that City will only get better once they have a natural left-back: Dimitris Giannoulis will soon be fully fit again, likewise Gabriel Sara, Isaac Hayden and Liam Gibbs in midfield.

In fact, Sara managed half an hour from the bench in Wednesday’s 3-2 victory over Bristol City, assisting Sargent’s winner.

While Norwich remain far from perfect, it’s hard to ignore the results, while visitors West Brom have won just one of their first nine league games after a 3-2 midweek defeat to neighbours Birmingham.

Wigan to beat Reading – 21/20

The first nine rounds of Championship fixtures have thrown up some oddities.

Preston North End have scored just three goals, by far the lowest for record, yet are somehow in the top half, West Brom are 20th with a positive goal difference while Reading are fourth with a GD of -5.

The Royals have won five of their first nine league games but they’ve also lost 4-0, 4-0 and 3-0, so it’s hard to see Paul Ince’s side keeping their points haul up for much longer.

Wigan, meanwhile, have had a solid start to life back in the Championship, losing just one of their first nine encounters.

Leam Richardson has fostered a real togetherness in the Latics camp with a core of powerful battlers like Josh Magennis, Tom Naylor and James McClean, while in Callum Lang, they have a bright forward who is making his mark at this level.

Forest Green to beat Morecambe – 10/11

Forest Green Rovers are playing in English football’s third-tier for the first time in their history, and the brief is very much survival.

A three-game losing streak had prompted some fears for Ian Burchnall’s charges, but a four-point haul from Accrington Stanley and Charlton means they kick-off this six-pointer outside the drop zone.

Burchnall had favoured a 3-4-2-1 in the first six games, which had left them short of outlets and means of pressing their opponents, but the signing of Bryan Fiabema on loan from Chelsea has allowed him to operate with two up top.

The 19-year-old, who has represented Norway up to Under-19s level, is billed by the Blues as a striker who not only has goalscoring instincts, but also the ability to operate back-to-goal and bring others into play.

With two up top, the Green Devils have found it easier to pin opponents back and from there, they have had the platform to get any combination from Regan Hendry, Myles Peart-Harris, Armani Little and Reece Brown on the ball in midfield.

We should see plenty of middle third control for Burchnall’s side against Morecambe, who sat in a lot against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday and may at times have been guilty of giving Barry Bannan too much space, even if the decisive goals ultimately came from the Scot’s corners.

Of course, Hendry, Peart-Harris, Little and Brown aren’t on Bannan’s level yet, there is still the danger for the Shrimps that unless they increase the intensity of their press, the hosts dictate proceedings.

Northampton to beat Rochdale – 4/5

After taking just one point from their opening six games, Rochdale accepted very early on that they are in a relegation battle this season and as such, they turned to a firefighter.

Jim Bentley is a survival specialist, having kept Morecambe at this level throughout his nine-year reign, and seeks to galvanize the Dale in their bid to safeguard their EFL status.

The Lancashire club have had some positive news off the field this week, but fears remain on it with just one point from Bentley’s first two league games in charge.

The performance at Carlisle was encouraging, however – especially the individual showing from latest recruit Scott Quigley – and losing by a goal to leaders Leyton Orient is no disgrace, especially with Quigley having a stoppage time penalty saved.

Nonetheless, it doesn’t get much easier for Rochdale: hosts Northampton have one of the best squads in League Two, with some star individuals in defender Jon Guthrie, midfielder Marc Leonard and forward Sam Hoskins.

The Cobblers are in the top seven and will feel they can push for the automatic spots.

Stockport to beat Harrogate – 4/7

Stockport haven’t had exactly the start they wanted to life in League Two, with the pre-season favourites for back-to-back promotions currently sitting on seven points from eight games.

County’s home form has been strong, however – in fact, it’s responsible for 100% of their overall tally.

The Hatters just need to iron out the basic defensive errors that have plagued their season so far because, going forward, they have the players to create chances and score goals.

Antoni Sarcevic and Callum Camps are more than capable of running games at this level, once they get into their stride.

Visitors Harrogate, meanwhile, could be vulnerable, having lost four in succession, although it was an improved showing from Simon Weaver’s side in the midweek 1-0 defeat to Salford.
