In what has been one of the most drawn out transfer stories of the past few years – one that is still not yet complete, it seems as if Kylian Mbappe is now finally departing Paris and leaving the French capital behind for Madrid.
A move that will see the 2018 World Cup winner join Los Blancos and with Real Madrid being the one club that is synonymous with winning the Champions League, Mbappe will look to add this trophy to his already impressive haul of silverware.
Then again, there is still a chance for Mbappe for to win continental honours before switching France for Spain and with PSG currently in this season’s Champions League Round of 16, they will look to build on their first leg advantage over Real Sociedad.
A 2-0 win at the Parc des Princes means that Luis Enrique’s men are in the box seat going into Tuesday’s return in San Sebastian but there is a level of jeopardy attached to this game and it comes on the basis of their recent domestic form.
Three Ligue 1 outings since their recent European win over Real Sociedad and only collecting five points from the nine that have been on offer. Not enough to derail their usual title bid but the speculation regarding Mbappe’s departure is certainly derailing the club at present.
If a 2-0 win at Nantes was routine, the draws against Rennes and Monaco that followed were anything but and although PSG will be favourites to advance to the last eight of the Champions League, there is still a glimmer of hope for Real Sociedad.
Can they take advantage of the state of flux which is emerging in Paris? That is the question that La Real’s manager Imanol Alguacil will be looking to answer in just a few hours and if he is to find the answer, his players are going to have to find a return to form of their own.
Four matches in all competitions since their first meeting with PSG and only a league win over Mallorca to celebrate since. More importantly, that was the first of those four fixtures, it has been three successive defeats that followed.
A cup reverse as Mallorca exacted revenge to go alongside league defeats at the hands of both Villarreal and Sevilla. The latter of the two coming just last weekend, as the Andalusian outfit came out best in a five-goal thriller.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with neither side coming into this game in the best of form, I believe they will cancel each other out. A draw will be more than good enough for PSG, it will be good enough for me as well at odds of 12/5.
