QPR to beat Wigan – 10/11

An awkward-looking week for Queens Park Rangers has gone as well as they could have expected.

Firstly, the Rs beat Cardiff 3-0 to go top of the Championship on Wednesday, after a round of midweek fixtures in which Sheffield United and Norwich both lost while Burnley drew at Birmingham.

Even more significantly, Head Coach Mick Beale had been linked with the vacant Wolverhampton Wanderers job but turned down the opportunity to replace Bruno Lage at Molineux.

Clearly, Beale feels he has plenty of unfinished business at Loftus Road, and his decision represents a huge boost for his side against out-of-form Wigan.

After four defeats in their last five league games, the Latics are in danger of sliding down the table.

Barnsley to win at Morecambe – 5/6

After going two league games without a goal against Exeter and Bolton, Barnsley are hoping to rediscover their form during a clinical September, when they hit three past Cambridge and Charlton.

The Reds are not exactly helped by the absence of Luke Thomas from a squad that is not exactly jam-packed with quality in depth in attacking areas, although Michael Duff was able to bring the likes of Nicky Cadden, Josh Martin and Herbie Kane off the bench last time out.

Tarn have a solid defence and a tidy midfield, so if James Norwood or Devante Cole can bring their A-game, they should do the business at Morecambe.

The Shrimps are bottom of the league, and while Derek Adams’ side have found themselves unlucky to be on the wrong side of fine margins on occasion, one win in 13 league games paints a bleak picture for the division’s lowest scorers.

The coastal Lancashire club have lost all four encounters with opponents seventh and above, scoring just once in those games and could struggle to quell another high-flyer.

Charlton to win at Shrewsbury – 6/4

Ben Garner hasn’t had things all his own way since moving from Swindon, who reached the League Two Play-Offs last season, to Charlton.

The former Bristol Rovers coach has been unable to add to the squad in certain key areas, most notably up top, and with operational question marks still hanging over the London club combined with the demands that come with working for Thomas Sandgaard, it’s been an awkward assignment.

Nonetheless, back-to-back wins has lifted things for Garner, whose side beat Portsmouth 3-0 on Monday night thanks to set-piece proficiency.

They have depth, too: Conor McGrandles, Chuks Aneke, Jack Payne and Tyrese Campbell would be regulars for a lot of teams at this level, and Garner has the luxury of bringing them off the bench.

Shrewsbury don’t have comparable depth and, if they get a couple of injuries or if things don’t go for them from the start of games, it can be difficult for Steve Cotterill to swing things his side’s way.

Mansfield to win at Crawley – 3/4

Stevenage, Leyton Orient and Northampton all drew last time out – the latter two with each other - and Mansfield took advantage by continuing their own impressive form.

The Stags beat Walsall 2-1 thanks to goals from George Lapslie and Will Swan, leaving Nigel Clough’s charges seven unbeaten in the league, a solitary point off the top three with a game in hand.

The Nottinghamshire outfit are also the division’s top scorers so, for all the talk of loaning out poacher Danny Johnson, they have managed to share the goals around with nine different players getting among them.

Mansfield could be licking their lips at the prospect of facing League Two’s second-leakiest defence, although Crawley did beat Newport 2-1 under the interim stewardship of Lewis Young after Kevin Betsy was dismissed.

Tranmere to win at Harrogate – 13/10

Tranmere have won their last five league games in succession – and not conceded in any of them.

In fact, Micky Mellon’s men have not allowed their opponents a goal in 465 minutes of football: if Harrogate don’t find the net in the first 15 minutes on Saturday, it’ll be the equivalent of an average night’s sleep!

Rovers have the strongest defence in League Two, with the pace and stamina of full-backs Josh Cogley and Ethan Bristow, combined with the athleticism of centre-back Dynel Simeu and the organisational qualities of his partner, Jordan Turnbull.

With Kieron Morris making a huge difference to the creative aspect since coming into the side, it looks bright for the Wirral club, who are unlikely to sit outside the top seven for too much longer.

Their hosts recorded a crucial victory last time out over relegation rivals Hartlepool, but that was just a second league win since the opening day for Simon Weaver’s side.
