Ed Quigley’s Ante-Post Armchair for Monday 21st November

Ed looks ahead to the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury this weekend and the Welsh Grand National next month.

Well, we had the farce that was Ascot on Saturday, and then we had the magic of Protektorat who sauntered clear to give the Skelton’s one of their best ever days as the gelding landed the Grade 1 Betfair Chase. Is he a candidate for the Cheltenham Gold Cup? Well on balance you would have to say yes.

Last season’s third at the Cheltenham Festival is still only 7, and it is possible he hasn’t hit his ceiling yet. 12/1 is available, and on soft ground who can easily be in the shake up once more.

The big question mark is naturally, what next for A Plus Tard? He was backed as though defeat was out of the question to repeat the performance he produced a year earlier, but never landed a blow before being pulled-up. He didn’t appear to be travelling at any stage, and Rachael Blackmore said she ‘wasn’t happy at any stage.’ The more worrying factor would be that the Henry De Bromhead team could offer no explanation for the lacklustre display.

A Plus Tard himself is a 12/1 poke to retain his crown at Cheltenham in 4 months time, and naturally is under a bit of a cloud for now.

Anyway, onto the weekend action, and it’s another big weekend for Antepost Armchair readers, as 33/1 Coral Gold Cup tip Oscar Elite should hopefully make it to the gig with a serious chance for the Colin Tizzard team. His form looks rock solid and off 139 I think he is a major player. The best odds available now is the 12/1 with the race sponsors.

Elsewhere at the Newbury meeting, we have the prospect of Paisley Park, Champ, Thomas Darby and Proschema locking horns in the Long Distance Hurdle on Friday which could be an absolute humdinger, and a lot of eyes will be on Stage Star on his second start over fences. The latter looked very smart on his debut and can enhance his credentials for some of the more lofty targets at the end of the season with a smooth performance here.

Looking further ahead, and the horse really jumping off the page for Chepstow on December 27 and the Welsh National, is the Rebecca Curtis trained PATS FANCY is a key contender here. This Soft-ground loving galloper who showed some smart form over fences as a novice and off 142, should have a lot more to offer.

He seems to have a natural affinity for Chepstow, so this race would look a logical target when the mud is flying in the middle of the winter. I expect him to have a prep run soon, and the top-price 14/1 at Coral makes plenty of appeal.
