It’s time for the second legs of the UEFA Europa League first knockout round ties, with eight spots in the round of 16 up for grabs.
Here are our betting tips for this week’s first knockout round first leg action.
Europa League Betting Tips - Thursday 22 February
UEFA Europa League Acca of the Day
Roma vs Feyenoord betting tips
Following last Thursday’s first leg in Rotterdam, it’s all to play for in the Eternal City, although most make Roma favourites to beat Feyenoord yet again.
Last Thursday, it was honours even at De Kuip, with Igor Paixão firing the home side in front in first half stoppage time, only for Romelu Lukaku to equalise mid-way through the second 45.
Two seasons ago, I Giallorossi beat the Dutch giants in the inaugural Europa Conference League Final in Tirana, before also knocking them out in the quarter-finals of this competition 12 months ago.
Having drawn on the road, Daniele De Rossi’s side are in pole position to repeat that feat and get through to the round of 16.
Feyenoord have been beaten at Stadio Olimpico all three times they’ve visited since the start of last season, winning none of six visits to Italy since 2002, losing five, so history is not on their side.
Stade Rennais vs AC Milan betting tips
Fair to say, following the first leg at San Siro, AC Milan are in pole position to get through this tie.
A week ago, I Rossoneri cruised to a 3-0 first leg victory, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s hot-streak continuing, bagging a brace, before Rafael Leão secured the win in the second half.
The seven-times European Champions have actually never won this competition, with this their 13th attempt to do so, meaning Stefano Pioli’s side going all in as they seek to reach the final in Dublin.
As for Stade Rennais, they’ve only won one knockout phase tie in modern times, despite the fact this is their sixth successive season in UEFA competition, with les Rouge et Noirs requiring a miracle to change that fact.
Freiburg vs Lens betting tips
This was always a tough tie to call and we’re no nearer to knowing who will get through following the first leg at Stade Bollaert-Delelis.
A week ago, these two played out a goalless draw in Northern France, with Massadio Haïdara having a late goal ruled out for the home side by VAR, due to an offside in the build-up.
So, it is winner takes all at Europa-Park Stadion.
Freiburg have to be favourites now, given that they have home advantage, with Christian Streich’s side seeking to win a knockout phase tie for the first time.
As for Lens, they made their Champions League return after 21 years away earlier this season, now seeking to get through to the round of 16 of a UEFA competition for the first time since 2007.
We give Freiburg the edge to advance.
Olympique Marseille vs Shakhtar Donetsk betting tips
After these two played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Volksparkstadion, it’s winner takes all at Stade Vélodrome.
Olympique de Marseille twice led in Northern Germany a week ago, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Iliman Ndiaye on target.
However, both times, Shakhtar Donetsk hit back; Mykola Matviyenko bagging the first equaliser, before Eguinaldo salvaged a draw deep into stoppage time.
Overall, les Phocéens are not loving life right now, with Gennaro Gattuso sacked on Monday morning, following Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Brest which means they are winless in six Ligue 1 games.
So, could Shakhtar Donetsk spring a surprise?
12 months ago, the Ukrainian champions knocked out French opposition in this round, beating Stade Rennais on penalties, so can they do it again?
Toulouse vs Benfica betting tips
Benfica’s narrow victory at Estádio da Luz means it is all the play for in France.
Last Thursday, the Portuguese champions required a pair of Ángel Di María penalties to prevail 2-1 in Lisbon, the latter coming in the 98th minute after Mikkel Desler had fired home an equaliser for les Violets.
Roger Schmidt’s team are targeting an extending run in this competition, with the Eagles reaching back-to-back finals in 2013 and 2014, although they’ve gone no further than the quarter-finals since.
As for Toulouse, this is their first campaign competing in Europe for 14 years, never before getting to the round of 16 in a UEFA competition.
So, should Carles Martínez Novell’s team turn this tie around at Stadium de Toulouse, it would be an historic night.
Sparta Prague vs Galatasaray betting tips
The first leg at Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi was a five-goal thriller, after which Galatasaray boast a very slender advantage ahead of this second leg in the Czech capital.
The Turkish champions led twice a week ago, Kerem Demirbay and then Dries Mertens both on target, only for Ángelo Preciado and then Jan Kuchta to equalise both times.
Nevertheless, when Mauro Icardi swept home in stoppage time, this snatched victory for Gala.
The 2000 UEFA Cup winners have not won a knockout phase tie for 11 years, so can Okan Buruk’s team complete the job in Prague?
As for Sparta Prague, they’ve already beaten Dinamo Zagreb, Aris Limassol and Real Betis on their own turf this season, so can they add Galatasaray’s name to that list and get through at Stadion Letná?
Qarabag vs Braga betting tips
The shock of the night last Thursday came in Northern Portugal, leaving Qarabağ in pole position to secure a famous upset.
Last Thursday at Estádio Municipal de Braga, the Azeri champions, against all odds, left 4-2 winners, with Marko Janković converting a penalty, Abdellah Zoubir scoring twice and Juninho also on target
João Moutinho did score a late spot-kick for Braga, cutting the deficit to two, but this still leaves the Archbishops with a mountain to climb.
To date, Gurban Gurbanov’s team have never won a knockout phase tie, beaten by Marseille in 2022 and Gent 12 months ago, but are very much on course to change that fact at Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium.
Sporting CP vs Young Boys betting tips
Lastly, this tie did go a lot better for the Portuguese club involved, with Sporting Clube de Portugal leaving Bern 3-1 winners.
In a frantic 14 minutes before half time, an unfortunate Aurèle Amenda own goal put Sporting ahead, before Viktor Gyökeres converted a very dubious penalty, only for Young Boys to go straight up the other end and hit back thanks to Filip Ugrinić.
Nevertheless, Gonçalo Inácio added a third for the visitors in the second half, securing a 3-1 win at Stadion Wankdorf.
Rúben Amorim’s team reached the quarter-finals of this competition just last season, hoping to go even further this year.
BSC Young Boys meantime have only featured in the round of 16 of any UEFA competition once in 36 years, doing so in 2021, and will not be changing that fact, baring a remarkable remontada at Estádio José Alvalade.
