The festive season is almost upon us again, bringing with it many traditions passed down the years. One that’s only been around for the past couple of generations is that of predicting the Christmas Number One song in the UK charts.

In the music industry, securing top spot in the charts on Christmas Day is an achievement that is both highly lucrative and also seen as being quite prestigious, so there are always lots of popular acts releasing songs at this time of year.

Typically, the Christmas Number One has often been a charity song, a novelty song or something with a festive theme. Indeed, this year marks exactly 50 years since the first Christmas themed song topped the charts on the big day, with Slade’s “Merry Xmas Everybody” beating Wizzard’s “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day” to top spot (still a travesty if you ask me).

End of the Road for LadBaby

Recent years has seen YouTuber LadBaby dominate the Christmas music charts as never before, securing five straight number one Christmas hits. The act and songs come under the novelty banner, but each time they raise money for the Trussell Trust charity, which is clearly a significant factor in their popularity.

LadBaby was the favourite to secure yet another Christmas Number One this year with the bookies until very recently. Now though, the husband-and-wife duo of Roxanne and Mark Hoyle have announced that they won’t release a 2023 Christmas single, so ending their five years of yuletide dominance.

The Pogues are Festive Favourites

According to the bookies, the new favourites to join the list of festive chart-toppers are The Pogues with “Fairytale of New York”.

The song, which can currently be backed at best odds of 6/4 with Coral to top the charts on 25 December, was originally released in 1987 (when it peaked at number two in the UK chart) and, alongside Pogues’ frontman Shane MacGowan, also featured the vocals of Kirsty MacColl.

It’s been a festive favourite ever since, but this year the ill health of MacGowan (he’s just been discharged from hospital for Christmas after being diagnosed with encephalitis last year) has added to the interest in the song in recent weeks.

It’s also worth recalling that MacColl was tragically killed by a speedboat when scuba diving (in a designated diving area) in Mexico on 18 December 2000. A Number One hit this Christmas would be a well-deserved posthumous reward for her.

Other Contenders for Xmas Number One in 2023

The other leading contenders in the Christmas Number One 2023 betting market are a couple of other perennial favourites, with Wham’s “Last Christmas” at 5/1 second favourites with new bookmaker BetMGM and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” at 10/1 with bet365.

Those two songs sell well every Christmas of course, but both could have to wait at least another year to be the season’s number one tune.
